Purchasing low-commission stocks?

Do any of you purchase individual stock from E*Trade, TD Ameritrade, and the like? Which are the best to purchase from? I want a website with good customer service. Low rates are good, but I won't be constantly trading. I plan to hold onto my stock.

I have used Etrade to buy a few stocks. I don't trade a lot so haven't looked for the cheapest service, Etrade seems reasonable and the trades seems to occur reliably and promptly. I believe that most services, including Etrade, levy a fee if the balance is less than a certain level and no trades occur in a given quarter - they do after all make most of their money off churners.

According to their website, E*Trade does not charge a fee for low balances or account inactivity.

I use Scottrade. They charge $7 per buy/sell. I know there are lower commision rates out there, but I don't do a lot of short-term trading. Scottrades customer service is great but I haven't used others to do a comparison.

How long have you been a member, if I may ask?

I've used TD Ameritrade for about 10 years without a single problem for trading both individual stocks and mutual funds. I'm not sure about what the other on line discount brokers offer, but Ameritrade's available research is very good.

For mutual funds, do they sell their own or are they selling those of others?

I don't think they have any of their own funds. There are numerous fund families such as American Century, Janus, Fidelity, Oppenheimer, to name a few as well as a ton of lesser known ones. Both load and no load.
