Preperation H

Been doin this for a while and figured I pass it along. Want to get rid of razor burn/red irritation? Well, after shaving I use Preperation H ointment on the red areas. No matter what kind of pre shave routines I use or blades for that matter I still get some redness on certain neck areas. So, I started to think about inflammation(im a nurse so that's the way my brain goes) and how to fix it. Prep H is an anti-inflammatory as many prob know and can be used anywhere. I shave at night and after I dry off I use a light coating on neck areas and redness is gone in a matter of minutes! any ointment should be spread very thin; less is more. the ointment soothes as it would with any inflammation and can even be used in the am because it absorbs fairly quickly. let me know ur thoughts?

Lol, My old Dr.(RIP Dr. Woolnough:angel:) used to recommend this as kind of a cure-all ointment. I'll never forget him asking me, "Anybody in your family have hemorrhoids Darryn?" I'd gone to see him in regards to the corners off my mouth refusing to heal after brutal wisdom teeth extraction. Imagine my reaction, as a 20 yr old!

Hey, I know lots of ladies who put it under their eyes. Might be worth a shot for those with bad irritation!

Years ago I was in a variety store and noticed that the Preparation H was under lock and key! I asked the manager why and he said it was because it was one of the most shoplifted items in the store. Drug addicts would put it over to cover up needle tracks.

Shaving is our drug. Interesting parallel.

As a retired medic, I can remember when Preparation H was a great anti-inflammatory. However, it's formula has been changed several times over the years, and the only active ingredient in the current Preparation H ointment is Phenylephrine -- a close cousin of pseudoephedrine. The two are commonly used as decongestants for treating colds and allergies (as in Sudafed, Neosynephrine, etc). They work by constricting blood vessels, causing the swollen membranes in the nose to shrink. So, it wouldn't be surprising that the same effect would be good for razor burn. When your skin is red and inflamed after a shave, the redness you see is blood in tiny blood vessels that are enlarged due to the irritation. The soothing ointment feels good, and constricting the blood vessels makes the redness go away.

Yep this should work, Preperation H like many other hemorrhoidal creams has a vasoconstrictor; in this case phenylephrine. Other creams/ointments have in addition to the aformentioned vasoconstrictor also have a corticosteroid, hydrocortisone being the most common. Just for a heads up you can look for the cream version which would work just as easily without the oiliness from the petroleum and waxes used in most ointments.

Hmmm... That is true of the ointment. CVS.com lists ingredients of presently available PH cream as:

Active Ingredients: Glycerin USP (14.4%)[soothing], Phenylephrine HCl USP (0.25%) [vasoconstrictor], Pramoxine HCl USP (1%) [numbing- a local anesthetic], White Petrolatum USP (15%).
Inactive Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, BHA, Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium, Cetyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Edetate Disodium, Glyceryl Stearate, Laureth-23, Methylparaben, Mineral Oil, Panthenol, Propyl Gallate, Propylene Glycol, Propylparaben, Purified Water, Sodium Benzoate, Steareth-2, Steareth-20, Stearyl Alcohol, Tocopherol, Vitamin E, Xanthan Gum.

Seems like the cream should be just the ticket for razor burn treatment.
