What's new

Post your local/flea market stone scores. (There's none left. Tim found them all.)

Most likely. There are several that go this route and it absolutely does work with the right hone composition. I have done some experimenting along this route myself and it makes a very big difference on the harder synthetic hones just like it does on an Ark.

I was just curious as to what the course/fine transition looked like. It may have had a sticker on one side telling which side was coarse and which was fine. I don’t see any difference from the top to bottom so assuming that’s the original stone it was likely all the same stone that was just dressed differently from top to bottom.

It is very glassy on both sides, but I tell myself one side is slightly less glassy. I may do a blind test to see if I can really tell. I got some 1500 grit wet/dry to work on the swaty, not that it is likely to get much use. I won’t be messing with the pretty one until I’ve honed with it enough to have an informed opinion.

The colder up north, the quicker is the snowbird return and they dealt me a good hand. Full house, Arks over Cotis

"Look what I found"
A collection of stones and hones from last weekend. Three 5” Coticules and a 5 x 2 inch black, blue-black hard ark. The Ark is a good rescue story behind it and will post soon. I don’t normally post B-hones, but these two have a above average hand feel. A “Itsapeech” and a “De-Fi” that I picked out of a group of hones. The cherry on top is a Norton/Pike “how to sharpen” booklet that is half instructional guide and half company commercial. It is a revised edition and dated 1934. The 5 x 2 1/2 Coti is on its death bed, dished till just entering the BBW

Ended the year with a bang with a tour of the world. Four naturals from
around the globe, lands near and far. A 2x4” from Belgium, a 8” from Ohio, a German Barber Gem sized Thuri with rub stone. To finish this foursome, a interesting unknown from Italy. This one might be thread worthy

Could that Italian stone be an ILR?

It’s possible, very possible. The little I know of a Imperia La Rocca came out of some heated, locked threads a few years ago. It looks Thuri-ish but harder than ones that I have. It is labeled “Made in Italy” so that put it in the area. It has breadknife scars so it been used with razors. The little I honed on, it gave up a keen, tree topping edge. Here is a post I did on this rock

I picked this up at an antique store, was really dirty/oily but cheap and felt fine so I figured I’d give it a go. After cleaning it up I’m still not positive what it is. It looks like novaculite and is somewhat translucent, very hard, laps slowly. It leaves a shaveable edge but it doesn’t polish as well as some of my other stones, almost feels more like a coticule edge.

Sounds like and looks like a hard/fine lily white washita. I have one that I can shave from. It is not the best but is doable. Great midrange stone as it is a fast cutter for a natural. Slightly translucent too.

A weekend’s worth of hunting. Another full house, Arks over Belgium’s. A 8” Trans with a touch of scotch. Has the glue spot were it’s label was. A boxed 6” hard black (HB-6) that lost all it’s labels and a contemporary stamped hard Arkansas. Along for the ride is a 5” Coti and a older, with the rounded bottom, BBW that lost its mate. Still has the glue residue on the top

Looking at the bottom we’re the glue was is appears very Washita. The joinery on the corners look vintage Pike/Norton

Amazing - I just don't know how you find them - or where you store them.

Some beautiful stones there.

Thank you
I have to give the sellers some credit. I have been training them for years what to look for. Than I can be in the right place at the right time to buy from them. With the stones I am building my honing fortress of solitude

Interesting day in the antique store!
