What's new

Possible Gilllette Tuckaway. Would someone help confirm?

I purchased this in an antique shop yesterday. It wasn't very much, so whatever it is, I won't be disappointed, but I'd like to know for sure what I bought.

It looks like a 1920's Tuckaway, but the head doesn't look quite right. Is it possibly a different head on a Tuckaway handle? If so, does anyone know what the head belongs to?

Under the head has the Gillette logo under the left "bullet", and "Made in Canada" under the right bullet.

At the bottom of the handle, above the inset "ring" it says "Patented 1920."

That's definitely a Tuck-a-way handle but i'm not familiar with the head....but hey....It's Canada so anything's possible. Seriously though, someone with much more knowledge will chime in i'm sure. That head is Uber cool looking.:thumbup1:

The tuck-a-way head is usually plated with silver and very shiny and smooth but that comb section from what I can see almost looks machined, kind of like a modern stainless look to it. The side profile of it when it's put together has a neat look to it with that funky comb.

That looks like a Tuck Away Handle, but the head is positively different from the standard tuckaway.
Gillette paired the Tuckaway Handle with the New type head as well, so it's possible that they made some odd blade plates like that that were not a large production run.
Gillette had a habit of using up old parts and mixed and matched when it suited them, so anything is possible I suppose.
Never saw a Gillette Head like that before.

You said that the head actually has Gillette stamped into the underside of the head, so it could very well be some kind a Canadian version of the Tuck-a-way, if so that would be a nice little collector's item.

The head doesnt seem like a New type. It seems to be a cross between the Old and New type heads.

If you could take some pics of the bottom of the Comb part.

The cap and guard look like a transition design between the New Improved and the New. I have a New Slim handle variant with the same cap design and the same cutouts in the guard for the little bumps on the cap's four corners. The difference of course is my razor does not have the blade positioning posts.

Note the guard difference between these two New razors.

I think you have a unique variant.

That sure is an oddball.
Whatever they call it, I like it. That definitely does look like the bottom plate has the same profile as the short comb News you seem to find a lot of in Canada.

Also note that the 3 holes in the blade guard like the Old types & New Improved......that is what throws me on this one...

I'm glad you mentioned that. I have two short comb News, made in the USA, that have the same cutout profile.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Here's a picture of the bottom of the comb. You can see a bent tooth of the comb, and the "Made in Canada" stamp.

You have me stumped.....I never seen a head like that before.

To me it looks like a "OLD" & "NEW" Type hybrid

Well then! Kind of fun to have a stumper of a razor. I don't know if the head's original, but I like the looks of it, and that's why I bought it.

Just wanted to post a boastful "after clean-up" picture of it. Hope that's ok! It actually looks even shinier than it does in the photo (yay for cell-phone pictures). This is after 4 baking-soda baths and about 90 minutes of off-and-on polishing with Flitz. I almost left it with the tarnish (I thought it gave it some character), but then I listened to SWMBO and I'm happy I did (as always)!

Does it have the famous Tuck-a-Way case? That would really keep it's value up. It already seems to be an oddball rare razor. Could be quite valuable. :001_cool:

No, not the Tuck-a-way case. I can't believe I didn't include this information in the original post, but it has a "NEW" case, similar to this one:

http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/The%20NEW/1930%20Oxfort%20England.JPG

The differences are that the outer coloration and inner lining are both a sort of tan / beige color. The case is in pretty bad shape, with what appears to be a lot of tarnish from the razor worn off on the lining. The only thing in the case was the razor, no blade box or anything like that (though there is a space for it). The space the razor was laying in didn't look like it fit the razor at all, so I'm assuming it's not the original box, but certainly can't tell for sure.

I can post a picture of the box tomorrow, if anybody's really interested in it.

Excited to see the pic of the case. This razor has me intrigued
