What's new

Possible Fatboy found today, and a cleaning question.

I picked up a good shape Gillette adjustable razor today for $5 that I believe is a Fatboy. It has a slightly shorter and wider handle than the two other adjustables I have (slims???). Also, looked at a Redtip for $10. In the same case as the Redtip, was another Gillette with barn doors that I'm not sure of. It had very fine checkering on the handle. Didn't see the price. Anyway, I passed on the Redtip because I am spoiled. My two slims and a ball end tech cost less than $6 for all 3, and my supposed fatboy cost $5.

Oh, I know there are plenty of cleaning posts, but I've tried soap and water, and Fantastik with scrubbing bubbles, but see no differance in my razors. The worst being my Grandpa's flaretip. The green and tan stuff won't come off. Am I not soaking long enough?

Congrats on your finds!!

It is possible the green and tan are corrosion and brassing.....maybe some clear closeup pics are in order.

There is an "unwritten" rule here at B&B. If you don't have any pictures than it never happened.:wink2:

nsl - Welcome to B&B!

+1 on the pics . . . there's a bunch of guys that have seen a bunch of dirty razors and can offer some good advice . . . if only we could see!

Generally speaking, the best way to clean a razor is to put it in a bowl, squirt some Dawn Ultra dish soap directly on it, and then pour (almost boiling) very hot water over it to cover. Let it soak and use a toothbrush to scrub it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner is good to help remove soap scum and to disinfect, but razors should not be left to soak in it. Scrubbing Bubbles has also been known to turn exposed brass (below the plating) to a brighter shade of pale . . . so it is not recommended for brassed razors with damaged or worn plating.

Once physically clean, a gentle polish like MAAS, Simichrome, or Flitz can be used with a soft cloth to bring out some more shine. Do not use Brasso or automotive polishes, as they are too harsh for nickel. Also never use chlorine bleach at any strength or boil your razors in either vinegar or plain water. Don't put them in the dishwasher.

a fatboy for 5$...who are these peoples who throw away diamonds in the rough ?

I'm pretty sure it's a Fatboy. Has a red setting indicator, and a slight bit of black under the adjustment knob that my others don't have. Code on back is either G or C and 2. I didn't realize that these things were worth so much. I don't do the antique or E-Bay thing though, only local flea markets.

Well, got it cleaned and just finished shaving with a Personna blade from Sally's, and set on 4. Shaves good. Got a few nicks and burn on the neck, but I've been getting that as I'm trying some new soap. Trying Kell's by itself to get the smell's, but may have to use my Nutragena as a pre-shave like I do with my Van Der Hagen. Anyways, happy to have the new razor, even though I don't need it. Oh, what about that Redtip I found? Should I consider it? I know they are well liked.
