I will be trying my first adjustable soon and was wondering how others here use their adjustables. In reading various threads where the topic is mentioned I seem to find 3 basic approaches. What's interesting is that two of the approaches are completely opposites of each other. What do you do and why do you think it works best for you?

More aggressive with each pass. The increased blade angle helps when trying to get very close (which is what you're doing in the later passes).

I find that by starting my Fatboy on setting 5 for the first pass then dialing it down to 3 for the final pass(es) I get a very close shave and no irritation. If I start out at 3 then it takes an extra pass to get the same results. If I leave it at 5 I get irritation when going against the grain on my neck. So decrease that setting if you have somewhat sensitive skin and want a faster shave.

With both my '65 Slim and my Merkur progress, I do the first two passes at a "higher" (more aggressive level) and then do the last pass (ATG) at a lower level.

None of the above, it depends what blade I'm using so for example a feather is usually a 2 or 3 setting but a perma-sharp a 5 with most blades on a 4 for me.

I tried increasing aggressiveness with each additional pass - this technique is apparently not for me :(. I'm a fan of starting with moderately aggressive on the WTG, then dialing it down for ATG and XTG passes.

Depends on what I feel like for that particular shave.

Sometimes I set my slim to 3 or 4 and keep it there but sometimes I start at 5 and decrease the agression for the successive pass(es) or just for the ATG in the moustache area.

I start at 7, then 5, then 3. I like using either a Feather, Astra, or Gillette Yellow.

If I use a milder SuperMax SuperPlatinum, then I just set it to 7 and leave it.

I voted set it and forget it, but have tried dialing it down and it worked a little better, I think. But I usually don't bother.

I run all my adjustables on their highest settings, including my Vision. I only adjust them to milder settings if I get irritation.

I voted "set it and forget it" and do that primarily. Perhaps 1/4 of the time I will adjust down with each pass... 7-5-3, 5-5-3, etc. I sometimes choose a different setting depending on the relative "sharpness" of the blade. Any method that works for you is the right one.
