What's new

When is the next razor the last razor? When is the dragon chased?

Q.: “When is the next razor the last razor? When is the dragon chased?”

I always tell myself the next razor is the last one. But when I get that one, there's always another "next one".
Luckily, razors are a lot cheaper to collect than cars or guitars.

Quite right…

But I also found this to be true:

For the less mathematically inclined:
The more you have mastered shaving (skills) and the longer you have shaved (experience), the less inclined you are to make new purchases all the time. 😉

I believe that as novices most of us went through a phase when we were buying items more often than once we had accumulated more experience and skill.
Call it Brutus’ Razor* if you like… 😎

* Razor as in “a principle or rule of thumb that allows one to eliminate unlikely explanations for a phenomenon”.
e.g. Occam’s razor

I shaved a fortune
After moving back to ‘mild/moderate’ razors, I got lucky!! The Wolfman WR1 is my ’destination’ razor!

:a29::a29:
I've gotten lucky too many times now. I have more amazing-for-me razors than I deserve... the Wolfman WR2 0.95 being one of them. I certainly don't need another razor... I was content for hmmmm a week or so, recently. <eg>

I have two more razors on my radar.... Will that be it? Yes... until the next, new shiny bright object shows up for sale. I would love to say I have arrived.... but I seem to be taking the scenic route.

The dragon has been chased and conquered, the Athena was my last and before that was the Osprey. I have a lot of favorites which includes many of the highly recommended ones. I don’t have a desert island razor but if I was forced to choose one it’ll be the HLS Taiga OC. My ideal perfect razor hasn’t been made yet. New razor designs will continue to be available in the near future and I’m having fun with what I have now. Does anything else matter?

Now I don't really care how perfect a shave a razor can give me.

Because no matter whether you encounter a razor that is irritating/overly gentle/rough...if you spend enough time with it, you can find the most suitable way to use it and adapt, just like our grandpas did.

Chasing the next razor?
Of course, I am also a member of B&B.
I'm just looking for thoughtful designs/crazy ideas/unconventional structures...so I know there's no, and it doesn't need to be, an end point.
The collection is just "as long as I like it".

I have no interest in the perfect grain of wheat in the field. Just one grain of wheat cannot make good bread.

Yes & no. I can be in my "zone" and get a great shave with all my razors. Some are lazy (Timeless SS.68, British Aluminum Tech, Timeless Bronze .38sb) as long as they are paired with a Feather I'm going to have a great shave. Others require more attention (Timeless Bronze .78oc, Merkur 37c, my Gems) also paired with a Feather (OK not the Gems, but you get me). I won't get into my Artist Club or Straights. Apples to oranges. I have spent TIME with these razors. I've bandied about several blades, questioned and reformulated my angle and on & on.

And then there is my Lambda Athena. Any blade, paying attention or half asleep, we'd spent only minutes together and it was effortless at first shave. I've heard it said of other razors from other members... Wolfman, Osprey, what have you.

IMHO time spent with a razor does result in success. But to say that there are not razors that yield almost immediate near perfect shaves goes against what I, and I believe other members, have found.

And whilst one grain of wheat cannot yield a perfect loaf I'm not a baker. But I'll go off on a pizza dough tangent. I'll put my double ought up against any other flour anytime and win.

As always YMMV.

Some people will find their Grail Razor, others will search, and never find what they seek. Many people IMHO don't even know what their Grail would be, or how it would preform.

Many years ago there was this reporter with a large weekly newspaper who was assigned to find Utopia, every week he would write a column that was published about what he found on his quest to find Utopia.

After many months looking for Utopia, he was on a lonely island in Pacific, filed his story for that week that, his editor read, saying he had finally found Utopia.

Senior asked copy boy how did report come in? Copy boy reported that the reporter phoned it in from the only telephone on island.

Senior editor sent reporter message, assignment is over get back to Florida, there is no Utopia, you did not find Utopia, as if you did it would not have telephone.

I'd like to say that I'm done buying more razors.
I'd like to.
But I know me pretty well and sometimes I get the urge to pick up something new.
I'm pretty close to satiated though. I certainly don't need any more razors and I don't have any holes in my den that need filled.

Even with a less-than-perfect razor, I enjoyed my time with it and resigned myself to the fact that today was DFS or even CCS, and an easy, non-chasing shave was just fine.

Razors that can complete the task immediately are great. I already have some, including Olaf rasmussen, Wolfman WR2... They shave smoothly and comfortably; there are also razors like Krect Sprial Curve or Travalong that require more attention and can give me more time to follow. It is an honor to get along with the oddly designed razor.

I love any razor I own and, appreciating their individual merits, each one wins.

Of course your razor race is fun too and we have all kinds of ways to play. :D

I’ve long since come to the conclusion that there is no Dragon to be chased. I do enjoy my rotation/arsenal of 9 razors. I have favorites but none of them would make me happy in a monogamous long term relationship :D it’s the most enjoyable part of the hobby to change the razor every week and get a new experience. Plus they look nice on display :D

A lot of my razors are purchased purely on the aesthetic.

Having a tweed case gold Gillette Tech on the counter looks pretty cool.

Then the next week maybe a cased Fatboy, or a cased President.

Its a rotational vintage decoration where I shave.

When shaving is a hobby/interest, then trying out different razors is part of it. Getting better at wetshaving means you don't *have* to find the mythical perfect razor, but that you can enjoy the different experiences available with different hardware.

I could try to find the perfect shoe for running. But I do run trails, streets, hiking... there are different shoes for different needs and moods.

I think shaving is more about finding a moment of zen or something close to it, which is to a large part not equipment related at all.
Trail runner hey? Very good, I'm ten years deep there. Funny, I used to like a day or two of growth on my face when I ran. Now I'm experimenting with these awesome close shaves and running the day of. What are your trails like?

Quite happy with several of my razors. Could easily shave with my RS10, Athena, Diamondback or Ti2 and not have another razor.

Yet it’s my hobby so I keep many others around.

The one honorable mention - GC ,76 is a fantastic value and I’ll never get rid of that razor.
