What's new

Please show me your hats!

A good friend of mine is a cancer survivor and celebrated his birthday yesterday. We bought him a voucher so that he can visit a cool little hat store to purchase himself a new hat. That whole process starting me thinking...... and I will probably go by and get something for myself as well.
What do you wear? Straw in summer, felt and fur in winter?
I would love to see some pics!

I have an Akubra Bogart that I bought for city use (when I am in the bush I wear a Bobby model), but to be honest I've never really had the confidence to wear it. I wish hats would come back into fashion for men.

When I travel I have a Brixton trilby that is my "travelling hat", and by that I mean the hat that I can pull down low over my eyes when I need to catch some Z's in airports, buses, etc. It's like this one, but I turn the snap brim down, and I've taken the feather out.

My every day hat is a tawny Stetson Whippet that goes very well with almost everything I own. When I am dressing a bit better or wearing my tan overcoat, I will reach for the butterscotch Biltmore President. I have a wool felt crushable fedora in a blueish gray that I will wear when I am bumming around in khakis or when I just need to grab a hat to walk out to check the mail. Come summer time, then it will be one of my Panamas.

It is up to us to dictate fashion, not to follow it.

Yes, I agree with you, to a point. I wear my trench coat when it is rainy, and my co-workers call me Inspector Gadget. The hat as well... it might be pushing my luck.
For the record, one of my style icons is Alain Delon in Le Samourai, so I do the best I can in a cruel world.

Now half as wise
I have a hat on my head every time I go out. 2 flat caps (both souvenirs from trips to Ireland) 3 fedoras, black, brown and grey, and I just got a black Homburg, that is now worn with more dress attire. Straw for the summer (Panama or Cuenca).

If more of us would wear hats, they would be back "in style". Legion, your mates are just jealous!:biggrin1:

I got some "Panama" hats from a customer who is in Cuenca, Ecuador. Not winter hats but I will enjoy them next summer for sure

David, would love to see a picture of this with the brim turned down! I just can't picture it, and I would like to for hat shopping purposes.

A cap is like what fits on a bottle......or has a "bill" protrusion in the front. Allowing protection only to the front.
A hat has a brim which goes completely around the hat offering 360 degrees of protection....
Do not confuse these with helmets, which is another subject.....:001_cool:

Thanks. Definitely very helpful.

I just learned two things:
1. Difference between hats and caps
2. I need a "hat"!!

This is my rain hat when I wear suits. It's so much more convenient that an umbrella. After 10 years it still looks great. It's a Stetson Temple.
