What's new

please recommend mild OC stainless DE razor

I shave my head every 3-8 days, depending on the weather. I have a lot of fine safety bar/closed comb DE razors which I love to use on my face, but removing a lot of hair growth is (relatively) time consuming. I have a Fatip Piccolo OC razor which is much faster but gives me irritation, probably because I am not that good at finding the perfect angle in areas that are hard to reach or not visible.

Please recommend DE razors which are

1. mild, comparable to eg a Rockwell 6S head #2 or an Edwin Jagger DE89. I am not looking for BBS, but an irritation-free fast head shave.
2. open comb, so that they do not clog easily,
3. are made of stainless steel, including the head; I dislike Zamak razors, all I had start peeling/corroding after a few years (plastic/aluminium/brass would be OK too, but I have not seen any).

I am buying in the EU, but mail order outside is fine too if it makes sense.

It really depends on your budget. As @lasta mentioned, the Vintage Gillette SC and LC are very nice. I have both the Gillette NEW short and long open comb razors. Both are excellent. I haven't used them enough to have a preference at this point and I only shave my face, but both are smooth and comfortable, yet give me shaves that last for 12 hours. That is sort of my sweet spot.

If your budget allows it, the Timeless 0.68OC is wonderful. The teeth are fully rounded and extremely comfortable. I have two hybrid heads... combinations of SS and Titanium I use with a Ti Crown handle... but just a SS razor head/SS handle has a nice balance to it. You can pick one up for a decent price if you shop their SS scratch and dent section. I've bought new stuff from them and "scratch and dent" and other than the warranty, you can't tell the difference. The only negative is you don't get the 30 day returns if you are dissatisfied..... So there is a slight risk there.

If bronze was an option, the Timeless 0.38 bronze is a great razor at a good price. Ooops.... I forgot, it isn't an open comb razor... but it doesn't clog for me even with several days growth of old man, grey and coarse whiskers.

There are several others... We are blessed to have so many razors available to us at all price points. Let us know what funds you have set aside so we can better target our suggestions.

I am not an experienced head shaver, but in my face I only get along well with the R41. If you handle it carefully you get an exceptionally close shave in a few passes. And can be very smooth, for me smoother than any other open comb razors. As a plus it's available in stainless steel.

Another very mild option is the Giesen und Forsthoff Timor, German made, excellent quality, as open comb version. As a plus the head is 20€ only. Though it's zamak it's worth a try. The thread is brass.

A Greencult 2.0 with level 1 OC plate might be a candidate for your task (the razor ships from Austria or perhaps might be even available via a local vendor in your country.).
Retails for 99 Euro (full razor).

Perhaps consider a Parker Variant Open Comb adjustable razor as an alternative. Approx. 70 Euros off Amazon.

I fully second @Phoenixkh 's recommendation regarding the Timeless .68 OC. Lovely razor.
But importing this razor to EU is pricey (thanks to international shipping and EU import sales taxes).

I would also +1 recommend the Tatara Masamune OC. It fits all your criteria, as a mild open comb razor that is made of stainless steel. It is produced in Portugal and would be more easily available within the EU.

The Lupo from Italian Barber. Italian Barber - https://www.italianbarber.com/ The OC72 is rated a medium aggression. I use the OC95 for a weekly face and head shave, it is aggressive. There are many options with different base plates available. All solid marine ss. You may find some listed on BST as well.

Shane at Blackland did comparison Open v/ Closed Comb, little difference.

When I shave Head I did it daily, did it with Schick SST DISPOSABLE.

Doing daily it was easy task.

As a fellow headshaver I appreciate your desire for an OC with 8 days of growth. The Merkur OC is the best OC I've found. I've tried the FatipOC slant, Timeless 68 OC, RR bbs OC, and all were all rough shavers for me. The Gamechanger and Lupo were not good shavers in straight bar so I skipped trying them in OC because I assumed they were rough. The Merkur is zamak but you could buy 3 of them and still be under 100 bucks and it will last you a lifetime.

If it has to be steel - I would look at tatara or karve A or B plate.

I primarily use a Karve Overlander and it's good for at least 3 or 4 without clogging.
