Please recommend me a fall jacket

What do you gentlemen wear during the fall? Right now all I have is a peacoat, which is overkill for North Carolina fall (unless you live up in Boone).

Most of the mods are sporting these.

I have the Autumn Herringbone Donegal Tweed jacket from Carroll and Co. (they have a website with images of this jacket under the outerwear section). It may be more than you would need in NC, but I think it is the ultimate Fall jacket and, with layering, can be worn in cold weather, too.

Leather Bomber
Soft-Shell Jacket
Carhartt Jacket (style #J141)

The climate in Upstate SC isn't much different than your location in NC. I spend lots of time outside, and have never been disappointed with these choices. Carhartt started offering a soft-shell jacket a couple of years ago. If it's like their other products (guessing it is) you can't go wrong. Of course, you wouldn't want to wear any of these to church, but otherwise they seem to be just fine.

The Carhartt jacket along with a sweatshirt have gotten me through many Spring (i.e. January/February soccer tourneys), so I know it is an excellent choice. Nothing like being on the soccer field at 6:30am (for an 8am game) on a Feb. morning to make you appreciate good gear :001_cool:

BTW, UnderArmor ColdGear is another product that is worth every penny. It's only expensive if you haven't tried it

For me it has to be a barbour jacket (border design), as most English people will tell you it rains like nothing else on earth during the autumn or fall as our cousins in the good ol USA say. It makes you look like a gentleman and best part is its waterproof, you can also buy a very warm fleece inner for it and during the winter it is fantastic.

Either that or a good Musto jacket.

Hope this helps

If you are just looking for an all purpose coat, I wear this:

Won't make you overheat in the fall, and can stand some colder air as well. I wear it for most of the fall and winter here around DC. Obviously if you need to be more formal, this won't work. For a more formal coat, I will keep looking here for a suggestion as well because I could use one.

What is this..."fall" you speak of?

It's the 2 weeks between it being too flipping hot and the start of complaints that we need our down jackets.

Greetings from Minnesota. Wish you were here.

+1. Completely waterproof. Warm enough--with the lining in--to handle Chicago Winters. And, the more "used" and nicked up it gets, the better it looks.:thumbup1:

A little Grafton and my well worn Barbour, and one might actually think I was somebody.

not sure how it will be worn but I have lived in this one since I got it a couple of years ago.. great for walking the dog in the woods or anything else outside in the fall around here. at least if a hunter happens to shoot you they can't say they didn't see you. also comes in other colors.

There are so many options it's hard to say without an idea of your "style". If you are an out-of-doors kind of guy then you can go traditional with a Barbour or barn type jacket or more hi-tech and a soft shell. The REI outlet online store is a good source for the latter. I have a TAD Gear soft shell that I probably couldn't live without... just roomy enough for concealed carry, but that's another thread..:thumbup1:

Greetings from MA. While not as bad as you guys have it (I lived out your way for a winter...a single winter... ) we feel your pain.

I have a Cabelas 3 season jacket. Picked it up for $20 on sale last year. Nylon wind/water repellent shell and fleece lining. I prefer an outershell to shed the elements and a lining of some type for warmth. Fall can get chilly here in MI. I tend to wear a 3xlt or 4xlt jacket, so my options are limited.

What is this "hurricane season" you speak of? :tongue_sm

I'll trade you a BC fall and Florida hurricane season for a Saskatchewan winter
We never really got a summer this year, only about 1/3 farmers actually got seed in the ground and harvested... once you take out the ones that lost everything to either water or frost.
Gonna be an interesting winter and spring.

I picked up one of these military jackets from old navy last year, and with a bunnyhug underneath it covered 95% of the fall and winter.
