Platinum 3776

It looks like it's been close to ten years since we've had a Platinum 3776 thread. I haven't bought a pen in years, and the 3776 is one that I've often considered, but never ended up acquiring. If you have one, or have used one, I would love to hear your thoughts, and see some pictures.

I have a couple - it is a great pen - reliable even if you do not uncap an inked 3776 for weeks. I prefer the medium nib, which writes more like a wet western fine nib, with less feedback than a comparable Sailor or Pilot pen. I have the Chartres blue one in M with rhodium plating and a translucent green gold plated version in F, which is very dark in color - almost looks black.

Mine was OK, a burgundy from 2004 or so. Good pen but I didn't like the flat nib, it looked cheap, and there was a sharp step from the barrel to the threaded section that bothered my middle finger pretty quickly.

Little things, I know, but still, my Sailors and Pilots seem better suited to me.

I bought a burgundy 3776 with a soft fine nib a couple of years ago when you could get one for about 70 bucks on Amazon. (Shipped from Japan) I'd never had a Platinum and was curious.

It performs well, and I don't have any complaints, but it's a pretty boring pen.

I see now they are about 150 bucks. I wouldn't give 150 bucks for it. I think there are much better pens out there for that money.

I haven't used one of these and I'll tell you why. Just for me, I don't like that big step down from the barrel to the section. Also, it is about $167 USD or more at the local shops. There are other gold nibbed pens for a lot less. However, if it floats your boat, go for it. What I prefer may not be at all what you prefer. I'd say, find a place that sells them in a shop and go try one out. That's what happened to me when I went to buy one pen and walked out with a Delta Spaccanapoli because it was so comfortable (steel nib).

Maybe Platinum did away with that step on the celluloid models? @Claudel Xerxes

They're one of my favorite pens. I have three of them: A green Medium, a burgundy Broad and a blue Soft Fine. Writing-wise, the Broad is my favorite and the Soft Fine is my least favorite. I usually keep about 8 pens inked and the only two I have that are always inked are a Pilot 823 and either the Medium or Broad 3776.

I bought a Burgundy UEF with silver trim a couple weeks ago. I really like it but I wish I would have bought a different nib. The UEF is nice but my Pilot Prera EF makes just as fine a line. It's unique among my pens how at first glance it looks opaque but up closer you can see it's translucent.

It's a good thing you can't get the green one with a music nib or I'd probably have bought one by now.
