Piecing together a brush

Just started wetshaving this month and really enjoying it. But my cvs brush is loosing hairs quickly and I'm sure its crap so I've been looking all over making sure i do my research on everything. Living paycheck to paycheck I cant go out there and drop a couple hundred on a brush so I have also been checking out the classifieds here. Some stuff I like but sometimes I dont seem to find anything that stands out to me. Amidst my searching I came accross thegoldennib.com . They have some handles and knots for sale. Do alot of people put together their own brushes? Is it worth it to go this route? anyone know anywhere else for stuff like this?

Being retired, I can relate to the paucity of disposable income so I did quite a bit of research to find an economical yet well-rated badger brush. I acquired the one pictured from iantang19821024 on eBay for $17.98 including shipping. I will try it this morning for the first time and will relate impressions later. Being a newbie also, the only thing I have to compare it to is my Omega boar brush which isn't all that bad really.

The Golden Nib is a fine source used by many of us. There "finest" knots at around $18 are very popular. Put together with one of Tony's pre-turned handles you can have a fine brush for around 40 bucks. Welcome to B&B, and happy shaving!

If you're on a budget, one of the best deals going is the Simpsons Special in Pure. West Coast Shaving has it for $25 less the 10% discount.

+1 for the Frank Shaving brush. I got a fine badger with a butterscotch handle and I'm very pleased with it.

+2 on the Frank Shaving brush, best bargain going right now.

You might also check into getting an Omega boar brush. Available from various sources at a friendly price

I tried my new Frank this afternoon for the first time and it's worlds apart from my Omega boar (as to be expected). Facial application was the most noticeable difference as the Frank holds tons more lather and with the rather large (to me) bloom very enjoyable.

Now I'm thinking of finding a vintage brush with worn out hair that I can re-knot. Some of the older brushes I've seen have some interesting handles.

Golden Nib is a highly recommended place to buy knots if you're into DIY projects.
If you just want a quality brush at low price, look for the Shea Moisture brush - $9 at Target, or about $13 including shipping directly from the manufacturer.

Thanks guys. I was telling the wifey bout the shea moisture brush at target while i was at work and come home and she went out and bought it for me:thumbup::thumbup: I think I may pick up a couple pieces of stock from tgn and hand carve some stuff up. I havent made something like this before but I have always been good at tearing stuff apart rebuilding stuff and custom making stuff so hopefully i can pick it up quickly

Don't forget to post before-and-after photos. :001_smile

And hey, If you decide you don't like the shea moisture, just drill the knot out and replace it with a TGN knot. You'll have a hard time finding a nicer handle for the ~$8 those sell for.

Well too late on the before pics. It def has a nice bloom and feel to it.

It is a huge difference to my cheapo cvs one that I had. A little soft, I think I like just a tad stiffer than what it is now. As of now I think I'm just going to keep it. I am thinking about drilling the knot out of the cvs handle and replacing it with a tgn knot. Might not seem worth it but its not too bad of a handle.

Weenerdog, I've seen a few re-knots of the VDH boar brushes popular at places like CVS. They turn out well - it's a good, useful handle shape. Consider stuffing something heavy in there for a little extra weight, if you think you'd prefer that. I do.

PS, that Shea Moisture brush gets even better with an o-ring or two around the base. A quick trip to Ace hardware and a couple bucks later, you might be surprised.

I may have to give that o ring thing a try. I have tons laying around from different car projects. would it come off easily or stay on pretty good.
