What's new

Penhaligons Question

My sister in law is headed for London on vacation. I read about the new formulation of Pen's and want to ask her to bring some back. I have read of the English Fern and Blenheim Bouquet scents. Any thoughts/suggestions?

What are you interested in? English Fern is a fern/fougere scent, but not a bright, lavender/rosemary/camphor type (like MdC). Its an earthy, mossy, "after the rain" type. I think its great, and if you're only going to get one, I'd probably suggest this one as the Blenheim Bouquet can be more polarizing. Its a peppery lemon/lime type scent and people who don't like it, compare it to a household cleaner like Lemon Pledge. For what its worth, I prefered the EF but I had no problems with the BB.

I have both and prefer the BB. But everyone's preference for scents is different. I happen to like citrus scents so the BB is my choice. To liken it to lemon pledge is simply saying that anything citrusy smells like lemon pledge because I cannot see any similarity at all between them other than they are both citrus based. But, heck, the EF is great too particularly if you don't like citrus as much as I do and happen to like fougere scents.

I picked up the Sartorial wooden bowl set and the BB refill in London today. I agree that EF and BB are both classic scents but BB is tops for me. The puck was the "newest" reformulation.

We eagerly await your impressions of the new Satorial soap !

Ha Ha, you may just be the incentive I need to open it and try it. Im flying home in the morning and was going to just wait until I got home. :)

I enjoy citrus and I also really like Harris Arlington. This also raises 2 questions:

1. I have seen the thread on Pen's creams. I guess I couldn't go wrong with them either.

2. What is the "Sartorial" soap?

Her trip could prove expensive for me.

The official description is:

"Sartorial is a contemporary interpretation of a classic Fougère; the traditional notes of oakmoss, tonka bean and lavender have been exquisitely stitched together with woods, ozonic and metallic effects, leather, violet leaf, honey and spices to create the perfect illusion of a tailor’s workroom."

To be honest, the ozonic and metallic effects create what is to me at first an unpleasant top note that disappears after making later, then I get the other stuff and its all good. Ive never been good at descriptions but can say the smell makes me feel like when I drink a fine whiskey and you feel the warmth and comfort from your mouth to your stomach. It evokes the same feeling for me.

As for the shave, I was on day 6 of a vokshod with nary a weeper and managed two this morning. Couldn't fine anything to either rant or rave about. Not the slickest, not the most comfortable (could be the blade) overall my feeling was just ....meh. I need to go home and try again with fresh blade and my water. Hoping that for me, the fragrance will deepen as I get further into the puck. So for me the jury is still out. I loaded my brush about 30 seconds and face lathered when I realized you would probably want a pic so I had lathered a little for the photo.

A big +1 for me. I came very close to buying a bottle of Sartorial cologne because I loved the scent so much. I was in Italy at the time though so I decided to buy some AdP instead. I can't wait to hear how the Sartorial soap smells and performs.

2nd shave was better than the first and to be honest the new blade made a big difference. I still don't like smelling the puck but it does develop, for me, a better scent after lathering. I don't find the scent to be long lasting but my face feels good and I cant fault todays shave.
