Peanuts in Pop?

I just saw the beginning of an episode of Backyard Oil after the end of a Deadliest Catch episode I had saved on the DVR. One of the guys was having "Peanuts in Pop". He took a bottle of Coke, drank a couple swigs out of it, then poured an entire 50 cent package of salted peanuts into the Coke. Has anyone had this? I Googled it and apparently it's thought to have been a known practice since the 1920s. I'm tempted to give this a try.

My father used to do this when I was a kid and it is something that I'll do on occasion. It has to be Coke and plain salted peanuts. Eat the peanuts as you drink. Try it!

Where I grew up in Texas you only did it with a Dr. Pepper, and yeah, like KyMash, plain salted peanuts only.

Once the Coke is gone I take it you eat the peanuts out of the bottle?

Nope. The peanuts float and you get a few with every swig. It is a test of skill to see if you can time your consumption to get the last nut with the last drops of the Coke. To perform the ritual properly you should purchase your bag of Tom's peanuts and your Coke from vending machines at a service station. Unfortunately the demise of service stations has led to a great falling off in the practice of 'drinking' peanuts.

Been doing that since I was a kid, and wife had Coke and peanuts a few days ago. I haven't had it in awhile; I'll grab a cold beer sometimes instead of a pop.

Hmmmm....

Pretty popular here in Georgia. Then again, so is anything Coke related. (Based out of Atlanta)

They also love Boiled Peanuts here. You can buy them just about anywhere. Often known as "Country Caviar"

I stopped at the gas station this morning and grabbed a bottle of Coke and pack of peanuts. They didn't have glass bottle Coke, unfortunately. Very good! I'm a fan. Definitely going to have that again.

The ritual in my neck of the woods substitutes RC instead of Coke, but I agree with you on the peanuts having to be Tom's.

Yup, plain salted peanuts and Dr. Pepper, good stuff. This is something my great grandpa used to do so I've been doing it since I was little.
My oldest daughter thought it was weird and kind of gross until she tried it.

I just saw this on Buzzfeed the other day. I had no idea it existed, unfortunately no peanuts for me. I might have to try it with cashews

I don't see why that wouldn't be just as good, if not better. I might have to try that as well.
