Patriotic Shave 2012

$UncleSam.jpg

Its that time of year again. Independence day is almost upon us.

Put away your German razors, Japanese and Russian blades, Italian soaps and English aftershaves,
and use products made in the Good Ol' USA!

Here are threads from previous years ...

I haven't picked out my software or chosen a brush yet, but my razor will be a Tradere handle with a Stahly head.

Its a heckuva lot of fun ... who else is joining in?

Although I certainly DO enjoy my Wade & Butcher and German straight razors, I have no problem with shaving American on July 4th:

GEM Micromatic Clogpruf SE, or a Clauss 5/8 straight or Torrey 5/8 barber's notch straight
Hazel Atlas shaving mug
Van Der Hagen or Col. Conk
Skin Bracer, Aqua Velva, or Pinaud's Clubman

Wait, where do I get an American-made shaving brush?? Any suggestions?

The brush seems to be a sticking point for a lot of people ... except for Rudy Vey, I don't know of any current American brush manufacturers. And no matter where the brush is made, its almost certain that the knot will come from China.

Marvy brushes are made in China. VdH brushes brushes don't say where they are made, but it is an American company, so we might assume they are made in USA. If you don't have a VdH brush already, better get one now, so it will be broken in and ready to use on the 4th.

There are lots of vintage brushes out there. EverReady and Fuller come to mind. But I don't have any of those in my collection.

As a last resort, you don't really need a brush at all ... there isn't a soap or cream out there that can't be lathered up by hand, and neither your razor nor your whiskers will know the difference.

I think VH is made in Texas, over in Liberty Hill if Im not wrong. They use boar knots and we have a ton of hogs and hog farms in Central Texas so they may be an option??

I'll have to check out the VDH brushes at Walgreens. At least the company is based in Texas...which is still in the United States despite rumors to the contrary, LOL!

Well for brushes the whipped dog silvertips are at least put together by Larry in Texas. Pretty sure the knots are chinese but then again almost all badger knots are!

In the spirit of America being a melting pot of different nationalities and cultures, I will be using products from various countries :001_tongu

(only because I don't own any USA stuff)

Actually, my daily routine is all 'Made In USA' anyway. I have been rotating between my Tradere and BRW razors, always use vintage Schick Plus Platinum blades, make super lather with VDH and KMF in my Robert Becker scuttle, and used restored 'Made In USA' brushes.

Come to think of it, my brushes are 'Made In USA' twice.

I'm good on the brush, razor blade and soap but might need a little leeway on the razor. Hang on the 4th is a holiday so the face gets a holiday too.

Dirty Donuts are so Good.
My 4th of July shave will be:

Vintage 1956 American Red Cross Gillette Tech B-4. with accompanying NOS Blue Blades.
Vintage Shulton Early American mid to late 50's Old Spice Mug w/ Soap
Vintage Shulton Old Spice 1985 Boar Brush
Vintage Shulton Old Spice 1978 Tankered Aftershave
Vintage Shulton Old Spice 1990 Spray Cologne

Happy Declaration of Independence Day!

I will be joining. I had a tough time last year. So far I'm going with:

Gilette SS
Mama Bears Lime Cilantro Ice
Aqua Velva

Not sure on the brush, might have to bust out my shea moisture, I think its Made in USA.

The brush is tough I will probably have to go back to my Shea Moisture brush.
I am also not sure what blades I have that are American, gotta have one somewhere. Ill have to remember to stock up before next Indipendence Day.

I guess I'll have to learn how to hone my straight razor soon... I will use either KMF or Mike's Natural Soaps, then I will have to use a parker brush (not USA though, so I could sacrifice a nice lather from a brush with one from my hands and KMF cream), then witch hazel it is for an AS.

Cool idea. Must've missed it last year, but I'm in. My probable lineup:

Brian Brown 8/8
Rudy Vey B&B 2012 LE
Mike's Natural Soap - Barber Shop
Captain's Choice Bay Rum

I'll be doing the Tradere OC, Personna Lab, AoS Lavender Soap, and Captains Choice AS.

Brush is going to be an issue. I only own Brits.

The brush is the challenge and I am not enough of an historian to know if we had a domestic badger and boar hair market and/or how long it survived in support of America brush manufactures. The last brush I purchased in school was 1970. It is boar hair brush but doesn't have a manufacture mark and I don't remember who made it. I currently plan on using a vintage Old Spice soap, which is in my normal rotation, but I am temped to use the vintage Old Spice shave Stick I chanced upon last month. In deference to some of our outstanding artisan soap and cream producers vintage Old Spice is the patriotic choice for me.

1960 F1 Gillette fatboy
NOS Gillette Platinum Plus Blade
Custom Rudy Vey Ivory Brush
Vintage Old Spice Mug with Soap
Vintage Old Spice Lantern Decanter with Old Spice Lime AS
Vintage Old Spice Scrimshaw Decanter with Old Spice Cologne
