Panama Hat Touches Crown

My first post in the Haberdashery.

I bought my first adult hat, primarily for skin protection (yep, I had some skin cancers).

I found several sites that told me how to measure for a hat, and I repeated the measurement just to be sure. It fits appropriately on the brow and ears, but when I touch the hat over my crown I can feel it (and only there). FYI, I have a thick head of fine hair.

So is this normal? Is my hat too small? Or do I need a different model? Any tips on adjustments?

Thanks.

If you could maybe show us a photo that would help. The hat should sit almost an inch above your ears- if it is a model with a low crown and you are lucky enough to have a full head of hair, it may well make contact.

Hat sits 3/4 inch above ears, and hat crown is shorter than the ratio to face recommended so that is probably the issue.

Is there anything I should seek or avoid when inserting material in the lining to raise the hat up?

Thanks

If you contact a good hat store, you should be able to get hold of some cork strips which fit under the sweatband to effectively reduce the size of the hat.

Welcome to the Haberdashery, your Royal Highness!!

I suggest taking your crown off before putting the panama hat on.

... see how much better that works?

(... sorry.)

Go buy a Tilley and get the correct fit. Hard in my experience to get a straw hat that fits correctly without spending a small fortune. I love my panamas but the Tilley goes around the world with me. Fits correctly and works.

Fun facts about skin protection. Unless the material has been tested it can’t be confirmed that it actually has any UV protection at all. Some cheaper end summer hats are actually made from Rice paper and provide no UV protection at all. So if you are buying a hat for sun protection always look for a hat that provides a SPF factor. I know Tilley hats do. If it’s made of felt (wool or fir) it should be as well. As for sizing issues I would check out any western shop (usually lots around anywhere) and try some hats on to find your size. If you want to try sizing your hat down you don’t need anything fancy. I just use paper towel folded up till its snug on my head. If it is to tight you can always take some out. Good for sucking up sweat as well. My two cents worth.
