Oriental No. 40 by Peretti

Got carried away with sampling, and just smoked a sample bowl of Peretti's Oriental No. 40. It is described as being Virginia, Turkish and oriental. On lighting could tell that it was Virginia based; has the mild Virginia taste and a slight, dry sweetness. There is perhaps a mellow spicy tinge to it, but not much. Perhaps a bit of mustiness, but again not much. And a bit of pleasant bitterness (of the kind like quinine water). Medium body; not overly full and rich. A touch of spiciness towards the end. I prefer Tashkent to Oriental No. 40 for its distinctiveness, fullness and richness. Some of that preference may be for the Latakia in Tashkent, but also the Turkish tobacco in the Tashkent was much more pronounced.

Love this blend, If you have a meerschaum I definitely recommend trying it in one, Orientals & Balkans really seem to come alive in a meer for me.

I don't have a meerschaum yet. Maybe someday; always wondered what special thing the meerschaum provided for and I appreciate your enlightening me!

Great reviews John. I think you're spot on. I enjoy the Virginia base in this blend and prefer it to the Tashkent for that reason. Peretti blends some great tobacco!

You should get one. No ghosting is the biggest advantage. You only taste the 'baccy you are enjoying at the moment. Plus, it smokes cooler, acts as a natural filter and can be smoked many times in a day.

I know that there are meerschaum pipes and pipes with meerschaum liners. Are there any particular advantages/disadvantages one over the other? I have never tried either so this is all new to me!

Liner meer is usually pressed meer which is cheaper and just not as good as block meer. The only exception is a calabash pipe, but that is a whole different realm of a cool, dry and amazing smoke. For my money, I would get a plain block meer pipe. They can be found on Ebay for very reasonable prices ( once the bug really bites you :biggrin1:
