Ordered: First Brush: Edwin Jagger

After much research I took the plunge and ordered my first brush, an Edwin Jagger Medium in Best Badger/Faux Horn. I have a very course beard and think the medium size and best badger is good all around brush for my needs.

Obviously I will be using my wife's Castille soap as I have been using it exclusively for many years to wash and shave and it has never let me down.

I will post a review to this thread when I receive it.

Thanks to all here who contributed mostly unknowingly to my decision.:thumbup1:

Great choice. I have been using this brush for about a month and am very happy with its performance and craftsmanship. Enjoy!

Nice brush!

Great choice for a first brush ... it may turn out to be the only brush you'll ever need. (But don't let that stop you, if you feel the itch of SBAD starting to develop.)

The first brush I ever owned was a Edwin Jagger Chatsworth in Best. I used that brush solely for about 8 years before I started this hobby. Then.... It's a good reliable brush. I think you'll enjoy it.

If you mean castille soap primarily designed for bathing I would not recommend it! That kind of stuff may get you by with a cartridge razor but you will most likely tear your face up real bad using a DE or straight razor with that stuff. Get a proper lather-able shave cream instead designed to be used with a brush. Use that until you get used to working with the brush, at least a few weeks. Then try a proper shaving soap if you want.

Congrats on the purchase. I use the same brush in small faux ivory (from crabtree and evelyn). Aside from the fact that I got a one off flawed model (too much shedding) that EJ promptly replaced, it has been my daily workhorse for over a year now.

Several years ago I purchased three 32oz. bottles of Dr. Bronners, Castile liquid soap. (Pepermint, orange and lavender) I had heard that it was very good soap. It worked very effectivly to cut the body oils, but it tended to burn my skin if I scrubbed my face and body hard with the washcloth. It seemed a little harsh on my skin. I now only use it to wash my hands and use it for washing clothes as a spot cleaner, before putting it in the washing machine.
