Open Comb - where to start?

Well I don't have a lot of experience with open combs; I just started using an open comb three weeks ago. However, I started with a CoonCat Bob's razor handle with a NEW head. This has been a great razor to start with. You can also find Gillette NEW razors for a very reasonable price in B/S/T or ebay. My comparison has been with a Gillette Tech (with the triangles in the base) and a Merkur HD (34C). The NEW razor head sits nicely right in between the two for aggressiveness.

The only open combs I've used thus far are the Gillette Old with a Ball end handle and a long tooth Gillette New with the Bar handle. Both are great shavers. Personally, the New edges the Old out just slightly for smoothness, but I don't feel that either is ridiculously aggressive as some would lead you to believe. Good luck in your search!

I've found the Merkur 1904 to be a really great open comb razor, and the HD open comb is a very close second IMHO. 
I'd say try a modern and a vintage...
Merkur 11c is a good modern. The head is similar to an old type.

I have a long-comb NEW and love it.
I'm in the same boat. It's one of three razors I own (along with a Tech and an EJ DE89L) and I use it at least 90% of the time.
The Merkur 15C has the same head as the two above.

I have tried several including old type, new improved and New long and short comb. I just picked up a #15 Aristocrat that I have been using for a couple weeks. I would pick up either a long or short comb New with a bar handle to start. You should be able to get one on Ebay for less than $15. So far a NEW head is probably my favorite.
I'm not a huge OC fan personally but you can't go too far wrong with a New. And at least they usually don't cost too much so if you don't like it it is not a big deal.

The open comb that made me a fan is the Gillette Sheraton. When paired with an Iridium Super, it gives me some incredible shaves. I also enjoy my Old and New enough that I ordered some replated heads and another BRW handle.
Like others have said, A bar handle long tooth new would be a good inexpensive way to test drive an open comb.

+1 I can not find much difference between long and short comb, so try one.
