On the road

What do people use when they are roughing it. I'm heading off camping with the scouts for a week. It doesn't seem practical to bring a bowl, brush and puck. Has anyone had good results with any canned shave creams. This might also work well at the health club. Once again I don't have the space for all the shave gear. Right now at the health club I've been using edge. It seems to work OK. the last thing I need is a closet full of canned soap, while I try to find a decent one.

Use the brushless cream that Trader Joe's sells. Kiss my Face also has a line of brushless creams, and there is Cremo and Eshave also. Eshave sells a small tube that is perfect for travel.

If you still want some lather, just about every shaving cream can be used brushless; my personal favorite for this is Proraso/Bigelow.

You don't get the mounds of great lather, like with a brush and bowl, but you do get a good protective base to shave on.

Shave stick, brush and razor don't take up that much room, beside you have to set a good example to the boys! :001_smile

Echo that - you could conduct a tutorial on how their "pioneering ancestors" shaved in the wilderness!

Cordially, AvT.

OK, how DID they shave in the wilderness? Obviously they were using some kind of straight, but what did the average pioneer use for lather? Tallow soap? Lye? Edge gel?

i bring a straight, travel brush and shave stick. Just because youre on the road doesnt bean you can do without a good shave

Actually, I think the pioneers didn't shave very often. For a wedding or a funeral, they might go to the barber shop (or a neighbor who was handy with a straight) for a shave and a haircut. In between those events, they probably trimmed their beards with a scissors, maybe followed by a rye whisky splash. Many, if not most, of the pioneers didn't have much money or time for splurging on "city slicker" grooming and even baths and clothes laundering were pretty infrequent. A pioneer with a tub of good shaving cream, a good brush, and a modern razor would think he had died and gone to heaven!

For travel or camping I use a tube of Proraso that is about 1/3 full and an inexpensive Burma shave boar brush. For a razor I tried using the disposable bic's but have decided to stick with my Merkur 23c and Derby blades. This set up takes up less space than a can of edge in my dopp bag. Bath and Body works also sells the Bigelow rebranded Proraso in smaller tubes for $5.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I think I'll try a travel boar brush and a travel size tube of a good shave cream. I have yet to use a brush without a bowl, so I'll give it a shot.

I don't mean for this to be a crass self-promotion, but Old Post Road No. 4 would be fantastic for just this kind of thing.

Comes in a travel pack of three 2.5 oz bottles. It will give you a great shave with your DE or cartridge razor, easy to carry, and you can wash with it.

Other than that, Nivea shaving cream can form up a nice lubrication by rubbing it onto your whiskers. I don't know if it's still produced or not, but I'm impressed with the tube I have.

the ability to use OPR #4 as a shave soap and wash soap would easily make it my product of choice for a camping trip. I wouldn't want to risk a brush out in the bush, and it eliminates the need to carry other soaps. Having said that, Clubman Rob really likes some canned foam products. So, he may be someone to speak with concerning this.

Shavette and a 1/2 ounce bottle of Pacific Oil. The Dovo shavette in particular holds four DE blades in its plastic pouch, making eight blades for use. That's about 25 shaves and the Pacific Oil is good for about a hundred.

That's my Canadian $.02 (or about a US farthing . . .)

Of course, I shave dry with my bowie knife when I'm out in the woods . . . :whistling:

More like Crocodile Dundee using a razor and then hiding it and using his knife when that lady comes around
