Old Spice shaving soap... Are you kidding me?

I managed to score an unused Old Spice puck and mug of the bay. I have had it for about a week and decided that today was the day to use it. It may be the best shaving soap that I have used. Its that good. How did it smell? Like soap, I could not detect any Old Spice scent at all.

I had a really great shave. I usually have a great shave but I didn't have to work at as much.

The good;
The easiest lathering soap I have used.
Lots and lots of lather.
Great cushion.
Pretty good slickness.

The bad;
They don't make it any more...

The ugly;
Our Fathers or Grandfathers gave up this product for canned lather...

Now I know why you guys are always raving about this stuff. I may have to start stockpiling it in the shave vault.

Yep, I picked up a NOS puck at an antique store last summer and was blown away by how good it is. As you said, it kind of just smells like soap now but WOW does it ever work! :001_tt1:

I have debated picking up a puck of the Old Spice, but decided against it after it became clear that finding one with OS scent was a complete crapshoot, and highly unlikely. I like the two vintage soaps I have for their performance, but the scent component of a shave is one of the parts I like the most.

I too purchased an NOS puck and mug after sampling the OS puck that jakespoppy bought and shared with me and texbilly and tsmbo. I have the same opinion as you - great lather, lousy scent, real good shave.

Is anyone certain that the OS soap had the same scent as the AS?

Thickest, densest lather I ever experienced. You are correct though...How the heck did our Fathers and Grandfathers switch from that to Barbasol:confused1:confused1:confused1

Based on my experience, I'm certain that the scent of the soap ISN"T the same as that of the AS. Very similar, but not the same.

The soap has a scent that is soapier...and not as heavily perfumed.

Anyone think it's possible that the Old Spice shaving soap improved with age, like wine, whiskey or scotch? Maybe our fathers and grandfathers didn't have the benifit of using AGED Old Spice shaving soap?

:cool:

Ahem...I shaved with the stuff way back in the 80's before it was discontinued.

If memory serves, it indeed lathered about like the vintage puck I recently purchased, but unlike my NOS puck, the ones purchased new back in the day did have an OS scent.

Watch the "our fathers and grandfathers" remarks, OK? :001_07:

Cough, cough..... I'll be more considerate of my elders, sorry about that:001_smile
I didn't want to say that some of our esteemed members picked foam in a can over OS soap. Besides, I thought that it was discontinued earlier then the 80's. When was it discontinued?

That OS mug collector's site has the mugs dated out to 1992, and they all came with soap (except the coffee mugs, I'd bet). Shulton got eaten by P&G about 1990.

Phenomenal stuff! I have a puck and a spare. I'd have more but the going rate on Ebay is sometimes shocking. I've been checking at antique stores. I also remember using it when I was young but sadly I didn't appreciate it. With age comes wisdom, or so I'm told.

I must have been living in a cave or something. What is this OS mug collectors site that you speak of?

Ebay sticker shock can be kind of a killer. I was able to get mine pretty reasonably.

I'm getting older, but I'm not sure that I'm getting any wiser.
