Old School Splashes - but unusual?

Other than the standbys - Speick, Proraso, Musgo, AV, you know, the ones that get mentioned here 24/7 and are easy to get - what else rings your chimes? That someone like myself in the US can buy if I try hard enough. I'm thinking stuff like Japanese splashes or the Russian ones mentioned here a while back.

Recommendations and vendors, please! And I am off on an adventure in splash land...

I just posted this in another thread but I like this stuff so much that it bears repeating. Get yourself a bottle of Pinaud Eau de Portugal. They market it as a hair tonic but it has the same ingredients as their A/S splashes. If you think you'd like a crisp citrus scent that is not cloying, you'll love this. Great after a shave and an excellent body splash too. A perfect summer scent.

Sorry for the redundancy guys but EDP is some great stuff!!

Pinaud EdP is a nice choice. Also 4711's Portugal is good too.

If you want to try the Japanese aftershaves, some of them are available on line for prices not much higher than you'd pay in Japan. If you happen to be near a major city (I know that they're in the NYC area, Chicago and San Jose), check out the Mitsuwa supermarked chain.

I'd be interested in your comments about the 4711 Portugal, I have not heard of it. I'm kinda on the fence about regular 4711 though. There's something about it that I can't quite put my finger on that keeps me away. It smells elderly-only way I can put it....

If you like Pinaud's EdP, you will love the 4711 Portugal. The Pinaud lasts a bit longer on me, but the Portugal is my favorite scent in the 4711 lineup.

I agree with Rob--it's great. There's a hint of the regular 4711 to it, but otherwise it has a sharp citrus note. The 4711 lasts longer on me than the Pinaud too. Unlike the rest of the 4711 line, I haven't seen the Portugal in US brick-and-mortar stores. I picked a bottle up this summer in Japan for about $22. Anybody know any on-line vendors?

I pick up the occasional stray bottle off Ebay, but other than that I've not seen it offered by any major vendors.

Time to start hunting. The nearest big city to me is Cleveland, Ohio. Not super big - maybe there is a store there. I will hit the yellow pages. Thanks for the Pinaud suggestions!

I have some regular 4711, but I will try the Portugal. Keep 'em coming! Russian aftershaves anyone?

I picked up a bottle of the 4711 Eau de Portugal after shave, cologne and balm from Jim R. ( a member, living in Japan). Don't know that it is available in the States. This has nothing to do with the 4711 we all know about.
It's a great clean scent. My favorite Eau de Portugal when it's applied. Unfortunately it doesn't have tremendous staying power and I find I have to apply it occassionally during the day. The other Portugal scent I love is Trumpers. I have also tried the Portugal hair tonic as aftershave as previously mentioned. Great scent....a little tacky, but it does the job.

Yep, try some of the Japanese splashes. MG5, Mandom, Lucido, Bravas, etc. Definitely different and they work.

OK, but the able-to-buy question keeps arising. Mandom and Lucido, yeah. I can get that online from Webichi.

Anything else? Keep it coming.

We joke about Mandom a lot and it is an interesting AS. However the Lucido is, by any standard, a great AS. So is Bravas if you can find it.

One that gets mentioned a bit but wasn't in your initial post is Spanish Floid. Maybe you'd be interested in that if you haven't tried it. Superlather has 300ml bottles of the Spanish and 400ml bottles of the Italian. Another option is for smaller bottles is the Vintage Scent Co; they carry 150ml bottles.

What are the differences between the Spanish and Italian Floids?

I have a big bottle of Italian! :) I got decants of the Floids from Superlather and decided I liked the Italian best. So I got a bottle of it from Superlather.
