Oil For Straight Razor

Some manufacturers to str8 razors recommend a light oiling after use to prevent rust. I have looked locally and, not surprisingly, cannot find a razor oil. I can find basic gun oil like Remington's Rem Oil easily and pretty cheaply. Is there any reason to find and use a razor oil over Rem Oil?

Mineral Oil. It's dirt cheap and is as good for your razors as anything you can find that is ten times the price or more.

And you can get a large bottle for minimal cost. I would say I have enough for 2 lifetimes when you consider a drop each side does the trick.

I keep a small jar of isopropyl alcohol with about a teaspoon of mineral oil in it handy. After I shave I dip my razor in it. The alcohol evaporates quickly and leaves a fine oil film on the blade.

I've been using baby oil on my straights when they're not in use. It's easily found in most stores and it's essentially just mineral oil.

Seems like mineral oil is the favorite. Aside from dipping which was mentioned above, what is the prefered method of application of the oil?

I have some of the sleeves on the way, but I want to keep rust at bay both before they get here and for any items that are stored for more than a few days.

Be careful of dipping in an alcohol bath - some scale finishes will suffer. I put a drop on each side of the blade and wipe it with my finger tips. A drop on the pivot and then wipe the tang with the leftovers on the fingers.

I use an odorless oil with a paraffin base - used for turbines. It is also cheap and seems to have a slightly higher viscosity than mineral oil although I agree that mineral oil is a great choice, too. If you really want to pack the razor away for long term storage then use Vaseline. Always be careful of the scales, though. Make sure whatever you use won't harm them. I damaged a set once that I purchased at a hefty price - had to restore the darn things again.

I'm in the knife business. I use mineral oil on almost everything since it is food safe and I never know what my buyers will use their knives for. I apply it with a cotton cloth. Mineral oil will, however, discolor bone/stag/ivory, so keep it off them! Wood should be just fine and mineral oil is widely used in woodworking.

It may darken bone and ivory, but it isnt going to harm them. Ivory, bone, and stag benefit from a light oiling, either neetsfoot or mineral oil works.

4 parts denatured alcohol, one part mineral oil. Kept in a jar, and given a good shake before use. Dip blade in solution after shaving and place opened razor on towel for a few minutes to let the alcohol evaporate. Keep it away from the scales as the alcohol will damage the finish. Touch up pivot & tang with straight mineral oil as needed.

Interesting. I've been using it on old jigged bone pocket knives for years. Especially if the old bone is dried up. The mineral oil puts some life back into 'em. I agree with you and don't think I'd want it on ivory. Never tried it on stag. I have soaked old dried out horn scales with it and brought them back to life.

It is good stuff for blades though. :)

Any members in Japan know what I should look for here? Coming up empty on Amazon for something specifically listed as 鉱油...
