Ogallala Bay Rum Soap Help

I've just purchased Ogallala Bay Rum + Sandalwood and having some issues. I do my normal prep of letting the brush soak while I shower and putting a little water on the soap as well. I load the brush etc just like I do with any other soap. However the lather I produce with Ogallala is very light and airy. It's a very different lather and really is useless for shaving. Has anyone had this same experience? I've tried adding more and more water with no real help. Any suggestions?

Ogallala Bay Rum Soap comes in two formulations:

The first formulation was deemed near useless for shaving, for the very reason you mention, it simply doesn't lather well. Check the reviews on this site, and you will see many people with problems similar to you.

It has since been reformulated, and the new product is said to be an excellent product, that lathers as a fine shaving soap should.

I am thinking your puck probably is of the old formulation. :frown:

Here is a Glycerin Soap Tutorial:

Just spend a little more time on target (puck) once the brush is really loaded you will have more lather than you know what to do with.
If you can't get usable lather you are doing something incorrectly.
This is the only soap I have that practically lathers itself.

I had a similar problem when I first started with Ogallala...the lather would disappear almost completely before I even reached for my razor.

I would second the other advice so far in this thread. I typically spend a little more time loading my brush with the Ogallala soaps...no need to go overboard, just a bit more will do.

My best piece of advice, however, can be summed up in two words:

FACE LATHER

Instead of working up the lather in a bowl, just start going to town on your face. My Ogallala will no lather in a bowl, no matter how hard I try and how much water I use. When I lather it on my face, however, I have more thick, gooey lather than I know what to do with.

Stick with it!

I'm not sure of previous formulations, but I second the FACE LATHER recommendation. I have a Bay Rum and Sandalwood shaving stick that lathers very nicely on my face.

Good luck.

I agree with everyone here... Face lather.

Start off with fairly dry brush. Soak it during your shower then before use shake the water off it. Then load it up on the puck. Heavily lather the face then dip the very tip of the brush in the water and lather. Keep doing this until you hit the sweet spot.

I bought a sampler pack and have had no problems lathering any of them? They lather OK, better than HBS, but not as good as mama bear or TGQ for me. Either way, I've gotten great shaves from them.

Thanks everyone for the advice. It looks like I'm going to have to give face lathering a try with this soap.
