What's new

Not another Pick my Cologne! Oh wait.

Hey guys I just wana smell pretty...

Err, anyway I've been rockin' a bottle of Hugo boss that I'm pretty sure I got for Christmas 5-6 years ago, maybe longer. Either way I am sick of the smell and want something less like a fruity teenager and more well like me.

I don't know how to explain the stuff but the closest I can get when I give the bottle a sniff is, it is a mix of some high pitched smell mixed with ammonia inhalants. Paints a pretty picture I'm sure.

Either way, on to what I'm looking for. I want something deep dark and woody if that makes sense. Ideally something manly. Something that would remind one of a Tom Selleck or Chuck Norris. To put it simply I am often refered to as the big guy at work and in my group of friends. I don't wana smell fruity or anything.

I like Burberry London. Its pretty woody. A good winter/fall scent.

Here is the desc taken off the Burberry Website:
A refined and elegant, woody ambery fragrance with top notes of fresh bergamot, black pepper, lavender and spicy cinnamon leaves. Heart notes feature leather, mimosa flower and port wine. Finished with tobacco leaves, guiac wood, dense oak moss and soft opoponax as the base notes.

Ive also heard Gucci Pour Homme is a good cedary cologne.

And Im quite fond of Opus 1870.

Real men wear the veg.

If you don't mind dropping a little coin, you could try Creed Bois du Portugal.

+1. One of the best wood fragrances.

Terre D'Hermes is fruity but so manly with black pepper and gun flint. The cedar is great on that one. One of the best masculine fragrances.

I have a large fragrance collection. My younger brother came by yesterday and mentioned he needed a new cologne. Like you, he was interested in one scent which was woody and masculine. After smelling over thirty different fragrances, one stood out head and shoulders above the rest. He loved L'Occitane Eau des Baux. This is cedar and incense based with just enough vanilla to keep it from being too heavy. When they have their sales, it can be found for under $40 for 100 ml. Another one to consider is Encre Noire with its dark vetiver notes. However, while Eau des Baux can be safely be bought blind (I haven't found anyone who thinks it's disagreeable), I would make sure to smell the Encre Noire first. It isn't a middle of the road fragrance and you'll probably love it or hate it. As mentioned above, Terre d'Hermes is a great fragrance and one to strongly consider. It's more expensive than the other two but is very versatile. It can be worn year round and is suitable for both work days and evenings out. It was Basenote's fragrance of the year in 2009.

I could imagine Tom Selleck wearing Creed Bois du Portugal. A similar frag that costs much less, and is arguably very similar, is Parfums de Nicolai - New York from a niche house out of France.

From the same house, i could easily picture Chuck Norris wearing Nicolai's "Patchouli Homme" the scent is awesome!

Also consider Azzaro Pour Homme if your interested in something much less expensive.

Deep, dark, and woody?

Lalique's Encre Noir

But only if you like vetiver based scents.

Oh, and Chuck Norris doesn't wear cologne. He bottles up his sweat and sells it to perfume houses!

To the OP, as a supplement not a displacement of the current discussion, you might want to look around at the discussions on this forum and say the reviews and see what you think might appeal to you. Do some word searches! I would be interested in whether this helps. Then bring specific scents up for dicussion. Again not to displace this current type of discussion but to add to it.

FWIW, I am feeling L'Occitane Vetyver, too. Try before you buy!

I have been going through lots of threads and reviews but the information is overwhelming. So I will probably give most scents a go over time. But for now I'll probably grab one of your guys's suggestions and see how I like it and go from there. I'm sure its a process to find out my tastes just like blades, soaps, brushes and the such.

In the end I think it's going to come down to one of the two L'Occitane scents for now.

Just goto your local department store and get some samples. (If Red Deer Alberta has department stores. Sounds like an small Inuit fishing village in the Canadian wilderness ...JK)

I might also recommend Fahrenheit by Christian Dior. A great winter scent. After about 30 min the cedar notes really come out in this scent.

You're not far off. We're basically a pit stop between Edmonton and Calgary.
I've checked out a few here but it's mostly all the same stuff you find at Walmart. Most of it smells like axe or cheaper haha. I might actually have to make a shopping trip to Edmonton or Calgary one of these days.

Skip the department stores and head straight to the Creed and Tom Ford counters at Neiman's. :001_smile

It's only a matter of time before you end up there anyway if you read these forums much...
