What's new

NOS Platinum Plus

I picked up a 10 pack of these on the internets doubting I would get what they were advertising. They showed up last night exactly as advertised...a 10 pack of old NOS Gillette Platinum Plus double edge blades. I don't recall if I ever used these in my early years of wet shaving as I didn't pay attention to these things, but does anyone have any idea of the quality of the blade and of the years of production?

They come on the same blue stock card that the current production blades do and in the same dispenser. The back advert references Atra Plus with Lubra-smooth strip and says that the blades were made in France.

Should I give these a go? Should I buy some more?

Try shaving with them! If they're in good condition then I think you will find they are excellent blades. They would need to have been kept in very poor conditions for them not to have retained their sharpness etc. Some folks think they are better than anything in production at the moment for sharpness, smoothness and longevity.
They were developed when Gillette, Schick and Wilkinson Sword were in tough competition and spending millions not to see how many more little blades they could get in a cartridge but just how sharp, smooth and lasting they could get a de blade to be.
I've got a few and I find they give a superb shave.
Is there a date code on them? The closer they were made to the golden age of the late sixties through seventies the better I think.

So, try and buy!

I agree! Give them a go. the Gillette Platinum Plus and the Schick Plus Platinums were some of the finest blades ever made. I have a few more ten packs of each tucked away that I just can't bring myself to open yet, though. Although, the ones I did use were excellent!

I am firmly in the NOS blade camp. At this point I don't use any of the current production blades because the old ones are just better.

Agreed, tho I still use current production blades as well.

Tho if the come on a blue card I'd guess the vintage to be a bit more recent. Would certainly like to know the source for these as well. For research purposes, of course.

+1 Yes please - me too, just for research. The Annecy factory closed in 1993 or thereabouts so the blades could have been made anytime up till then. I've got a 10 pack of 1991 L2 Platinum Pluses packed in just the same way. They're excellent blades.
