Noob question - what defines a shaving cream?

Hi,

I’m new to DE shaving, and I have a question about shaving cream. Over here in Singapore we only have a limited selection of creams to choose from – Tabac, Palmolive, and Omega. Rather than buying online, I was wondering if I could substitute them with other creams and lotions that I see my wife using.

So, what is shaving cream actually? Must a product be labelled as shaving cream before it can be used as such?

It should say shaving cream. You can use other soaps for shaving, but I dont reccomend it. Also, make sure you don't buy a brushless cream and go about trying to make lather with a brush. You will most likely get bad results. Singapore is a very nice city by the way, at least it was when I went in 2004.

Thanks guys. The shave cream wiki was very helpful. At least I see a few familiar brands like Crabtree, Loccitane and the Body Shop. I'll keep an eye out for their shaving creams the next time I pass by a shop.

If you go to a L'Occitane shop, forget the cream (it's rubbish) and grab the CADE soap, it's very nice. One of my favourite shaving soaps.

Redryder! I'm in Singapore too! Besides mustafa for tabac omega and all head to gloskinMD at Pacific Plaza for Truefitt and Hill products. Their out of soaps for now but they still have Trafalgar and West Indies creams left. Hoping they get some stock soon. Prices are fantastic as well!

There's another store that seeks institute karite soap and cream at suntec city but they've run out of stock for quite a while. Don't remember the name of the store. Will try to find it for you. Great to see another wet shaver in Singapore!

Oh yes that's a great resource. The store at suntec city which sells IK is Mom's Essentials as per the thread. Called them up 2 weeks ago and they ran out of the shave soap but still had the cream and asb in stock. You can call them again to see if they have new stocks available.

Mustafa seems to be thinning out the number of shave related products available. Do stock up while you can. Another resource is dridiot who's from Singapore. Drop him a PM here and check out his store on the bay.

What I said above about L'Occitane applies also for Institut Karité: forget the cream (it is somewhat bad) and go for the excellent soap.

As for the ASB's, both L'occitane and Institut Karité are excellent. I have a slight preference for L'Occitane balms.
