I have been using the Merkur 23C Long Handle Safety Razor for some time now and it gives me a really good shave (better than the Gillette Tech I started out with and sold) and I hold it and use it with ease and comfort. If the 23C is representative, it appears that Merkur makes quality razors at reasonable prices. Since it probably human nature to want to try different things, is there a DE I should try next? As always, thanks gentleman.

I've tried several razors, but I always keep going back to the Merkur HD. If you want to try a gillette, I recommend a 40's Superspeed.
I've got the merkur 33c in my rotation along with a bunch of vintage razors. I think my next purchase will be the Bull Mastiff custom that several people here have been going on about.....absolutely beautiful craftsmanship.

I'm sold on Gillette Super Speeds. I truly like them better than my Merkurs and I'm all about German goods.
My favorite is the Gillette Open Comb Ball Handled New. But I would also suggest that you try a Gillette Adjustable DE (Fat Boy, Slim, or Knack) An adjustable is like having 9 razors in one. I know some guys that change the adjustment for each pass.

I recommend you try a Merkur 11C (open comb HD). It's my favorite razor at the moment. That's liable to change though. 
Definitely try an adjustable. It's nine razors in one.
I use a Gillete that my dad bought in the early 60s.It's older than me...lol
Try a Red Tip Superspeed.
