newbie shower shaver

OK, I'm sure I will get laughed on this board and ridiculed, but here goes. I shave in the shower! Its wet, isn't it? I've been a cartridge shaver for 30 years and just 2 weeks ago switched to a safety razor(Merkur Progress). I actually made this shift for 2 reasons: #1- looking for a longer lasting shave(ie- closer) and #2- expense of the Fusion cartridge replacements. I had already used the Proraso(CW Bigelo) shave cream for the last year and that made some difference. I apply the cream at the end of my shower and can work it in real well with my hands; I then can adjust my faucet so it is just dribbling out, which I use to rinse my razor. I make the initial pass strictly WTG, lather again and do a combination of across the grain and against the grain on my second pass. rinse and am done. A pretty decent shave in approximately 5 minutes! Go ahead now and rip into me- I can take it! (this is my first post, so excuse me for forgetting the acronyms) Thanks for all your great info, fellas!

Welcome to B&B!

I was a shower-shaver with the Mach3, and I'd probably still shave in there if I wasn't terribly afraid of messing up my straights.

I was a shower shaver too, with my M3. I find that with DE shaving that I need a very good view, something that my shower mirror does not give. As well, shaving cream prep and the rest just doesn't work in the shower for me, even though you'd think that the steamy environment would be ideal. I feel less rushed at the sink and big mirror. I do sometimes shave before my shower, which is also B&B heresy, just because it is easier to rinse all of the shaving cream off.

I'm not that fussy, if i'm in the shower and i want to shave with my DE i do so. If my mirror gets foggy i give it a wipe with a dry sponge. Todays shave infact was with a Merkur Futur with a Gillette 7am and TOBS sandalwood soap in the shower. Was a good shave finished off with Penhaligons BB Aftershave. :thumbup1:

Never was a shower shaver.
I feel like I need a mirror when I use a DE and I would never think of using a straight in there.
My mind reels at the thought of potential damage from a dropped straight in the shower.

:eek:

I have never tried shaving in the shower, I normally shave right after. I use the soap on the mirror trick and it always works for me to keep the fog down.

Your story is very similar to my own;

and that method worked GREAT for me; until I moved to Texas; I am having to seriously think about becoming a sink shaver now. grrrrrr

I'm a shower shaver but can understand how people would be fearful of a straight. I find that I can reallly scrub my face good at the start of my shower and then apply a layer of proraso to soak in while I shampoo/soap up. At the end of my shower, I rise that base layer off and reapply. I find that the combination of the pre-scrub, lather sitting on my face and steam really makes for a great shave.

To address the concerns with the mirror, I got one of those small suction cup mirror for the shower door. Works like a champ and doesn't fog up if you spray it down with that after-shower streak free stuff.

First off welcome to the B&B.

I pretty much exclusively shower shave too. I have a cruddy shower mirror with it gives me a decent enough view. I use my DE in the shower, build lather with a brush and mostly use soaps. I use the excess lather to wash my face...

Shower shaves for me are fast, efficient and pleasant.

Straights in the shower...shudder. That would be a risky art.

Thanks everyone for the kind welcome. For some reason I thought shower shaving would be unheard of as I had not seen mention of it whilst lurking. Luvmysuper- I hadn't thought about that scenario and now that you mention it, I shudder as well. Hophead- we pretty much have identical routines. I use an oatmeal scrub for my face wash and then Proraso for my shave. I have a goatee and after my first pass can usually use what is left in my chin whiskers for my second pass lather. I'm a hophead (and beer homebrewer) as well! Thanks again everyone!:001_smile
