What's new

New to DE shaving, please help decide on new brush!

Hi B&B,

I'm fairly new to DE shaving, maybe about a month and a half in. I'm having a little trouble figuring out a shaving brush. I'm fairly certain that I'm going to be going to Larry at Whipped Dog for the brush since I've read great things about him on these forums (his prices don't hurt either :p). I'm really I have a Van Der Hagen brush--the one that comes with the soap, mug, and stand set--and it seems really floppy to me. I'm thinking I'd like something a little stiffer.

My question: Is there a knot size and loft that would work well for someone who is still deciding between soap and cream, and bowl and face lathering? I saw in the wiki that a "medium" sized brush makes for a good starter brush, but I'm not sure what knot sizes and loft would be considered "medium."

I'm kinda thinking silvertip with a 22 or 24mm knot, and having the handle drilled to 20mm (45mm loft) instead of the standard 10mm (55mm loft).

If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears :) And, if it's not too much trouble, the reasoning behind your suggestions would be much appreciated--I'm still learning and would love to start accumulating some knowledge. Thank you!

Best,
Scott
