New Soap from QED: "American Gent" Scent

I don't know when it was added to the website, but I just put in an order for some more Sandalwood, B&B and Tobacco soaps when I saw it. Needless to say, I had to try it! I'll probably receive it around Wednesday or Thursday and will make sure to leave a review here.

The scent description is as follows: "...a shaving soap that pays tribute to the casual sophistication and confident masculinity displayed by American men in the 1930s and 1940s. These decades demonstrated a remarkable sense of fashion, grooming and deportment that defined a unique American style. That style carried over into music, and certainly into film [William Powell as Nick Charles, Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine], featuring men who were sophisticated and charming or, when it came to challenging situations, tough and relentless. American Gent captures the essence of that era with a complex combination of wood, floral, citrus and herbal notes."

Has anyone tried this stuff yet? Charles is a bit vague as far as the notes are concerned, but I guess there's good reason for that; he wants to keep his genius a secret. It's also $20, so I'm assuming there are some pricey oils in there, hopefully a nice dose of his heavenly sandalwood. Considering his VERY high standards for his products, I'm sure it'll be awesome :thumbup1:

It DOES contain sandalwood! :w00t:

"I don't want to go into a lot of specifics about the scent other than to say I tried to create something I felt would have appealed to men who lived during an era which, for me, represents the pinnacle of men's fashion (and deportment) in America. (I am certain some chaps will want to argue this point from a couple different perspectives ... so be it.) American Gent is a very complex formula ... it contains Sandalwood, but Sandalwood from 3 different countries that are interwoven with an intriguing blend of essential oils that produce the perfect rose; underneath, a dry citrus along with delighful hebal notes. I love all natural scents but, for me, the most exciting ones are complex blends (containing several essential oils) because they play with your nose by constantly changing.

My Tobacco is unique. It smells more like a good cigar than most scents called Tobacco; there are even spicy and "ashy" elements to the scent.

This is not helping put the brakes on SSAD.. No not at all. Good Thing Christmas is coming up.

I shall resist. I am a rock. I am a rock. I am a rock.

I am an island... and yet Resistance is Futile.

Well dang it gentlemen. I wanted to be the first one to brag about ordering this soap but I bollocksed up my order and had to redo it. So rest assured it is on the way.

This is nice eh? Charles makes some of the best smelling soaps around and they are skin friendly to boot. I am in the midst of my annual October buyathon and was all ready to order a new Casablanca or Mocha Java stick when this new variety of soap came up. You know it went straight into the shopping cart.

The notes sound right up my alley. Sandalwood? Rose? And a mix of others too secret to mention? Uh yeah. Where do I sign up was all that went through my mind. I will let you know how it performs and smells later this week.

Regards, Todd

I have enough soap to last me through 3 lifetimes, and then Charles has to go & make this. Needless to say, it's already been ordered.

I'm pathetic.

Well gents I get bragging rights anyway. When I talked to Charles about my messed up order he told me it was indeed the first one. So even though I had to redo it I was FIRST. So there. I cannot wait to try it.

Regards, Todd

Thank you for that vote of confidence.

Nah -- a pure tobacco scent doesn't really float my boat. Combined with other scents is a different story. I'd kill for a soap that smells like Aftelier's Blond Tabac, but that'll never happen.

we're in the same vote. I mean boat.

...woh. that sounds good! (call Charles... I'll buy one, too.)

Guys, received American Gent yesterday & used it this morning. My first impressions:

• It's somewhat similar to the Sandalwood/Rose, but...
• The Sandalwood note is more prominent.
• There's something else mixed in. Hard to tell -- lemongrass, maybe? -- as well as other notes.

At first blush, you think, "oh, sandalwood and rose." But then as time goes on you realize it's more complicated & subtle than that. Rose + ... other notes, resting on a beautiful, creamy sandalwood base.

American Gent strikes me as a refined, subtle, complex scent. I think it'll open up as I use it more -- there seemed to be a bit of a thin skin on the surface of my soap. As that gets scrubbed away, no doubt the scent will become richer & deeper.

The bottom line: Another winner from Charles! :thumbup1:

Received mine today, too!

First off, I agree with Evan that sandalwood and rose immediately comes to mind; they're both up front with the sandalwood being a bit stronger. The rose is most certainly there, though, and isn't shy about making it's presence known. There's also something of a dry citrus and herbal tone in the background as well, but I can't pinpoint what it really is. Too, there's something more resinous and balsamic in there, almost rendolent of the B&B scent. Some type of spruce, evergreen or juniper? It's hard to tell; everything blends so well together.

All in all, Charles has put his scent-smith skills to great use once again. It's definitely a very complex blend and everything melds together extremely well.

Early tomorrow morning, I'll shave and give it a go. If it's anything like the rest of Charles' soaps (property-wise), I'll go ahead and put up a review.

Definitely smells like a winner, now to see if it shaves like one :thumbup1:
