What's new

New post old topic: New brush funk!

This is only my third badger brush purchase, and while I am familiar with the idea of new brush funk, this has been the first to actually have it. My perception of the smell was more reminiscent of moth balls than wet animal fur and was very strong. I ran it through the shampoo, vinegar-water, shampoo again, condition-rinse routine and that did seem to help. Do I have a defective shnoz or does the fur funk really smell like moth balls? The brush was purchased from one of the reputable online U.S. companies that most of us here have done business with.

I just started wetshaving and I had the same experience. I bought a cheaper badger brush from ebay from someone in hong kong. I got it a few days ago and it smelled just like you said, a mixture of moth balls and wet fur.

I know I made a mistake not buying a better one right from the start, but I have used this one and it does work.

I shampooed the brush a few times and then used it to shave and now that it has dried out completely it doesnt smell all that bad.

Is it common for a badger brush to have such a smell? Or any brush for that matter?

I found that lathering up in my hand with a strong smelling cream always took care of the badger smell. Do this a few times and it took care of it, I used AOS Sandalwood, which has a pretty strong scent.

thanks Luc for the link to breaking the brush in. I didn't think to search for that. Hence coming up here on the post about the brush funk.
