What's new

New, not vintage, straights.

Now i am into straights i want to explore a bit more, been really lucky with antique finds, i have 5 that are now honed and i use, a couple i have passed on, plus 12 i have yet to restore, so at the moment i am giving up on buying antique straights, till i visit my fav stores:lol:, so i am thinking that somewhere down the line i should perhaps buy a straight that is made by a current manufacturer, first ones that spring to mind are ti and dovo, what do you experts say on these razors, and am i missing any other brands of new razors that maybe i should look into?

I just bought a Wacker here...

I expect these blades to become more and more difficult to come by, as the old Craftsmen like Herr Wacker age and give up the trade. I've been told that there are less than ten left of the model I bought, here..

I wanted a Hart, but I expect that razor will be around for some time to come, so I grabbed a blade from a premier german craftsman instead.

I think the lower price point Dovo's get some respect while the higher price point seem not to. I only have the 6/8 Bismarck which I really like plus the tortoise handled specials get a lot of love too.

That looks stunning:thumbup1:

While i don't have a terrible amount of experience, or razors for that matter i currently have a Le Grelot 3/4 and a nos revisor cowboy extra that are both excellent razors and will be with me forever i still cant help but be impressed with the tortoise special that rounds out my trio, it really is the little razor that could.

TI's are extremely good. Historically they had the reputation for low quality control but excellent shaving characteristics, however in the last few years they have revamped their manufacturing process to meet demand and improve their QC and are now extremely good in both respects. Dovo historically had a reputation for excellent QC but generally not as good of shavers as TI, except for a few models like the Prima Klang and Bergischer Lowe. However like TI their quality has slipped as the demand has outstripped their ability to meet supply (basically the same problem TI had, only a few years later), and they've yet to take the sort of steps as TI to address the problems.

My worry is that Dovo's "solution" to their manufacturing difficulties has been to outsource production to China, based on the recent appearance of Chinese Dovo knockoffs, and other issues. They're not making TI knockoffs, so they're not just cloning popular razors, rather I suspect they're making knockoffs of razors that they're already making in that factory. Kinda like Chroniks back in the 60's. Then there are the other really wierd Dovo problems like the laminated Dovo that showed up a few weeks ago that had been plated to conceal this problem, all this to me just smells like Chinese production and Chinese QC...
