I just finished my first restoration. The knot is set. Is there a cleaning or prep procedure I should follow, or do I just use the bad boy?

I am usually so anxious to use my new creation that I never prep the knot very much. I just give it a quick rinse then a cleaning lather with hand soap, rinse again and use. Any boar or badger stink resolves itself in the first few uses. Congrats on your first restore and please post pics of your work!
I will palm lather my new knots many, many times before I put it on my face. All of my TGN knots have taken a good seven to ten palm lathers to reduce the funk to where it doesn't overpower my favorite soaps. I'll palm lather a soap, rinse out the brush, and do it all over again two or three times a night until the original scent has diminished. It's great practice for making lather with new soaps.
