New Hair Problem

Good evening gentlemen, after lurking on this site for a couple of weeks I decided to join. I retired from the Canadian Military a few months ago after 27 years service and decided to grow a bit more hair. I now sport what I would call medium length hair which is quite thick and a bit curly as it was when I was much younger. At first it was strange having hair touching my ears again but I got used to it. The problem I have is with static in my hair and the flyaway strands and curls that go with it. From other threads I have read on here I was thinking maybe a pomade or something like it. I tried some gel but I didn't like the cement head feeling, any suggestions?

There are lots of products out there that will control problems such as this with your hair.

The best thing to do though is to get some advice from the person who cuts your hair. They might have some very good stuff right there in the shop. That way you'll know for sure. :thumbup1:

By the way, congrats on your retirement.

Something you could do to try and see if it helps is to start using hair conditioner (if you aren't already) and stop using shampoo every day. I too have very thick hair and I've found using conditioner every day + not shampooing every day helps tame the frizziness. Good luck! :thumbup1:

Thanks for the idea, I don't use conditioner and do shampoo everyday so I will have to try your advice.

Welcome!
Using conditioner will definately help, though using it without shampoo first might make your hair feel a little greasey rather than the effect you want.

Pomade can help too but unless you want to us it for styling a shape then use only a tiny amount. Put a pea sized amount on you fingertip then rub it between your hands to give an thin layer on your hands and to heat the product lightly and then just glide your hands over your hair.
Avoid gels are they really are just for wet-look styling.
You might also like to try a cream though. They tend to be nice and light and are more for taming fly-aways then for creating shape.

Good Luck!

You might be able to use a little Vitalis or Protein 29, just enough to give your hair a little weight. It's been years since I've used either, but I don't think the protein 29 has as strong a smell, though the Vitalis smell didn't bother me.

Wanting for wisdom
Well I've no help on the brillo pad you count as your hair .. .

What follows became a self serving thing but well here it is.

On another note . . . the Texan beat me to it. Thank you for your service. We Canadians have a proud military history. I think we (you) have done much good in the world. I really don't think we in Canada appreciate the military as much as we should.

I don't want this to sound like this is coming from a kid . . . though in some ways it is, and I'm happy to be naive.

I've been in the Canadian reserves thousands of years ago (Royal Canadian Hussars . . . which may explain my appreciation of Lilac Vegital) fully expecting to be deployed . . . some reserves at that time went to Cyprus . . . a walk in the park compared to what is happening now. My father was in WWII in Italy, France, Holland and who never never took part in a Remembrance day parade as he believed that what he did was a necessary thing but not something to be celebrated but told his sons some bit of what happened and had a few very large scars. (He was in the 48Th Highlanders out of Toronto . . . and born in 1919 was one with experience . . .you do the math)

COngrats on your retirement and on behalf of Canadians, thank you for your service

I'm sure Don Cherry will mention your career next Saturday

AB, you might also take a look at the friction lotions from Pashana or the Pinaud hair tonics. They are essentially the same thing. Greaseless alcohol based splashes for the hair. They contain a touch of glycerin which acts an humectant (it attracts moisture) and as such leaves your hair conditioned a bit. Since you say you have rather thick and curly hair, these may do the trick. I caution you that Pashana also makes a brilliantine version of their lotions and they contain a good dose of mineral oil. They can and will make your hair look GREASY if you overdo them. Don't confuse the two types if you go this route. And congratulations on your retirement.

Regards, Todd

Hi Todd, I found Pashana Blue Orchid Friction Lotion in a store online and was wondering if you can tell me how strong the scent is. From the description I pasted below it sounds like it could be quite flowery smelling.

Pashana Blue Orchid is an invigorating massage lotion that refreshes, stimulates and cools the scalp. With an essential oil blend of lily, sandalwood and bergamot, blue orchid will be a welcome addition to your hair's daily grooming routine.
