New DB Scuttle! WOOO!

For our anniversary, my wife told me to go ahead and order one of the Dirty Bird scuttles that I've been drooling over for a while now. It's been a long wait, about 7 weeks from the date of the order, but it finally arrived in the mail yesterday! It looks amazing, and I was really excited to use it this morning. It's certainly worth the wait, and I want to thank Julie for wonderful quality and great colors! It feels really solid, but not overly heavy (unless you fill it up!). And the 1.5 is just the right size. In fact, it's the same size as my cheap salsa bowl from a certain blue-colored big-box retailer out there whose name starts with W and ends in -mart. So it just feels right when I'm whipping my brush around in it.

I tried it out, filled it with hot water for a minute or two, dumped the water and filled it with hot water again (including the lathering bowl). Then I showered. I dumped the water once more and filled the base with hot water one last time, then whipped up a lather. It felt warm, but not as warm as I was expecting. I have to say, the spiral ridges helped my cream lather pretty easily. It also kept the lather warm-ish, but imagined it would be warmer than it was. The lather was relatively warm throughout the shave. But, I think I need to use hotter water next time. How do you guys get your scuttles and lather nice and warm? Microwave the water to get it piping hot before filling the scuttle? I know you can get the lather too hot, so I don't want to go to that extreme.

I also noticed that the cream lathered differently than usual. I think that, with the added heat, I will need to change the amount of water used to make the lather. It seemed drier than usual. It'll take a little practice to get it right.

Anyway, here are a couple photos. I ordered it in Berry Rim on Blue, with a dribble port at 5 'o clock (handle being 6 'o clock and spout being 12 'o clock). I like the dribble port. It worked really well, and let me moisten the lather after the first pass, which was too dry.

In any case, I love my scuttle and look forward to using it a lot! Thanks again, Julie!

You will enjoy it in the cold weather.

I have been using my scuttle every day since I got back home

It was certainly hot water. Too hot to touch for any length of time. For some reason, I just imagined the lather being warmer than just "kinda warm". Maybe I need more lather to fill the bowl up? Or I need to let the bowl heat up for a longer period of time?

You don't want to have HOT. You want warm.

Hot water can damage your brush bristles. It causes the tips to curl. There are a few post on here discussing this. Check your brush over to see if you see the tips curling after putting it in hot water.

It is also very difficult to make lather if things are too hot.

I have the temp of my tankless set to 118 degrees which is just a little too hot to stick my hands into but not hot enough to hurt things.

I fill my sink with hot water with the scuttle in the sink and let it sit to warm the pottery, pull it out and cork it up, then pour the water out of the bowl.

My lather stays warm (100 degrees or so) for the duration of the shave.

Okay, so it sounds like it was about right. It was warmer than body temperature. I think I'll fill the sink up, too, to get the pottery warmer, and see how it goes from there.

Otherwise, I'm really happy with it. It's a gorgeous scuttle, and nicely made. Having never used a scuttle, though, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect.

Congratulations - nice scuttle. I have a Robert Becker scuttle and it comes with a rubber/plastic stopper for the hole. I suspect that keeps the water warmer than an open hole.

Warm is what you want. Hot would be sweet, but it wouldn't work as well. Your lather would be bone dry by the third pass.

That's a good looking scuttle you have there. Feel free to post some pics in " A thread for bowl latherers and scuttle lovers" and join the wolf pack. ( if you want to )

Thanks, guys! I really like the colors. It actually looks a bit darker purple in-person than in the photos. It'll look nice on the counter in our bathroom.

I'll shoot some pics over in that thread, sure. :001_cool:

When I first read this thread title, I thought it said "New DB Scuttle! Wood!" I was thinking this woman has way too much talent, an excellent potter and a fine carpenter! I even looked at your photos before I read the post and thought to myself that the wooden scuttle looks awesome (and if I dropped it, the scuttle might not break).

It is still an excellent looking scuttle! Enjoy.

Cheers

LOL! That's funny! I can't say how many times I've read a title or sentence and thought it said something totally different.
