What's new

Never any deals anymore!

I was purusing around the bay tonight looking at razors, and have come to realize.... There are never any good deals on there anymore. Someone had a GEM micromatic bullet tip listed for 65 bucks, and it looked like it had been beaten to death twice over!! Does anyone else see the crappy fact that now the supply and demand factor is taking effect. Even the few local antique stores that I used to browse, and all day find fatboys and slims with cases for 5 bucks are now upwards of 50... And then we come to the Old Spice shaving pucks... Good lord did those things skyrocket in the last 7 or 8 years. Even before I DE shaved I used these lil guys. My dad had a supply, that at the time would make Shulton themselves envious... No longer... but for the mere price of 30 usd you can get the genuine thing again... Sorry if I vented too much, but for as many people that look at you funny if you shave "the old way" they sure are making a pretty penny...

I agree with you on the ebay aspect I never find any great deals on anything any more shave related or not. But People do post things for sale just to get them moved they just don't last long. The problem is that people will pay the prices they are asking I see it all the time in the antique stores, also a few people I know who have shaving items passed down from family members who think they are sitting on a gold mine. Who feel the item is worth more then what it really is and will not budge on the price for personal reasons.

I would say in the past 6-12 months prices for straight razors.
even ones needing TLC have gone up..im thinking antique shops are on the top list of buyers

I've only been looking for the last couple years and I've already noticed deals are getting harder and harder to come by. Ebay is way up and because of that, a good number of antiques shops I've been to have said that they don't sell their shave stuff in the store. It goes straight to Ebay. I have gotten lucky a couple times when people put a Buy It Now and I get it before anybody else but that's about it.

yep most of the junk stores and charity shops now use ebay, the amount of what i would call scrap razors on ebay that sellers think are worth a bit of cash is unreal, a bargain on ebay is few and far between these days.

I haven't been looking long enough to see the upward trend in prices, but I have noticed the current state of affairs: used items are fairly expensive, especially when compared to new items. Perhaps there really has been a resurgence in interest in traditional wet shaving. In any event, high used prices simply beckon someone to produce competitive new items...

Flea markets and estate sales are always a good way to shop. Takes a bit of effort to scour the markets and find the estate sales but it can be worth it. Flea markets yield the best user grade razors. Estate sales, which are hit and miss-mostly miss, can yield some fine scores. I prefer the flea market experience because of all the other junk that can be had dirt cheap.

This is the universe's way of saying your den is big enough. LOL.

I have only been trad shaving for less than a year but I see it too.

I think it means that I will stick with what I have and enjoy it. The only thing I have yet to add is a nice scuttle. I would like to try one.

Other than that, I keep telling myself im out. LOL.

I guess this could change, but in my experience both the supply and demand of things on ebay has been cyclical.

i think it depends on what you are trying to buy. I think i just got a pretty good deal on some straights yesterday. not a steal, but pretty close. one needs work, the other is good to go.

"You don't mind an occasional metaphor now and then, do you?
Some people don't like my metaphors; I don't know why, but... Anyway,"*
There was a time I was working with this British gentle man, we were quite Young at the time and he had the habit of wearing this smelly green jacket.
I really did not care for this jacket all that much.
years later however I saw these jackets again and for some reason the jacket appealed to me now.
So I started to wear one.
About a year later, this jacket became very popular and every one was wearing it. They are expensive and became a Status symbol.

Now I still wear the jacket, mostly because once I take to some thing I tend to stick with it.
The jacket is no longer popular, and I don't get nods of approval from Status Conscious yuppies for having the same good taste as them.
But that is not why I got or wear the jacket I got it because I liked it.

same thing with DE shaving.

I've noticed a big increase in vintage shaving brushes that are in need of restoring. The prices are triple what they were a year ago. Its because of the increase of us that are restoring brushes.
I think everyone on B & B should not buy any vintage brushes or razors on the bay for a year. Then those prices will drop.

I find on the 'bay you have to find the diamond in the rough.
That basically means you have to do a lot of searching.

The best deals are elsewhere (including the BST!)

Still some great deals to be had in the BST.
its about the only place these days that you will get a sought after razor at a good price, the guys in the usa can still get seem to get the od great score in the wild, in the uk eveyone now just bungs everything on ebay.

Yeah, I am looking for a good scuttle too. I had a small fleeting thought of trying to make one, but then I realized I had no equipment to do such a thing lol!! And it would prob end up costing more than just buying a Dirty Bird, which I hinted to the fam over and over this holiday...So heres hoping

I have found that the old Avon decanters that are shaped like cars, trains, pipes, ect are still fairly cheap. I picked up 2, one "spicy" (very similar to the shulton OS), and the other "wild country", a musk. They were both full and a good steal at 6 usd and 5.95 shipped. But I'm just waiting for them to go up too.... Boy I'm really not this cynical lol :taz:

There are occasional deals to be found on ebay, usually they are not in auction format. I search for numerous items on ebay and my real steals have always been buy it nows but these are generally snatched up right away. I have lost a few in the pay pal check out process even, so you gotta be quick. A few weeks ago I scored a decent Toggle for very cheap on ebay. In the end it is all luck.

I see a lot of beat up Super Adjustables and Slims in the $30 range. I wouldn't call that a bargain, but it also isn't too awful. I paid about 20 for my SA, so I guess I got lucky.
