Negro shaving recommendation

Guys I use a Phillips electric shaver and it works fine but occasionally I get razor bumps which are so unsightly painful. As a black man what do you recommend to shave with in order to minimise the incidence of razor bumps?

By the way the gillette type wet razors just tear up my skin as its so sensitive and it takes about a week to heal properly.

Try Gillette Guard..they work well..ebay has em cheap..from India..1 month wait...might be worth it...wait for those bumps to clear up...try a double edge or single edge razor..a shavette disposable may also work..try experimenting

Get a DE, learn the growth pattern of your hair, and shave accordingly

Most black guys have irritation on the bottom of their neck because that is where the hair grows up instead of down, and they are essentially shaving against the grain from the start

Have you tried shaving with the grain only? People of African descent are known to have thick and curly facial hairs. The problem is from shaving them too close which gives them a chance to get under the skin and become ingrown. I would recommend trying wet shaving again but with a quality soap or cream (not canned goo) and only shaving with the grain. If you'd be willing to try a DE razor, there is plenty of good advice on here about technique and products to use. I am not black and my facial hair is admittedly rather light, but I thought that I had sensitive skin until I came here and learned the proper way to get a good shave.

Thank you all so much for the rapid response! You all have given me some much information that I can use.

The DE has worked for me, but I also use bump patrol, tend skin works too. both should be available locally.

It did take some time to learn to use a DE properly, but I find that a good shower, pre-shave (I'm on a proraso kick now), and a sharp blade followed by bump patrol and a balm work wonders.

FWIW, West Coast Shaving carries them - delivery is likely much faster than one month.

Have you tried a gillette tech? I have twenty different DE razors and the old techs are the most forgiving. I don't think I could cut my self if I wanted too, try it and and as recommended go with the grain only.

Forty years ago when I was a young USAF officer we had an unoffical program whereby black men with problems were taught to brush their beards regularly throughout the day in ne direction to help it achieve growth in one direction only and help the hairs grow straighter.

We gave out surgical scrub brushes for this purpose. Some men said it helped others not so much.

As a young white man, at the time I was having a lot of ingrowns., so decided to try and think it helped me.

If you wish to try realize this is not an overnight fix but may take many months to achieve any results

Man, good luck. I was in Basic with some black guys and some had a helluva time shaving (there was also a redheaded guy that had the same problem)..

I remember part of the drill (sorry!) being: let it grow out a little, tweeze or otherwise get rid of any ingrowns, then when you shave, go over every area in every direction. Something about the end of the hair then being flat instead of pointed.

I'm black and I switched to DE shaving after I'd gotten tired of the ingrown hairs. As long as I dont shave against the grain under my chin, I'm fine. Also, I must shave in an upward direction on the lower part of my neck to avoid going against the grain.

+1 on all the suggestions. Gentlemen of African decent often have curly facial hair. this means that if you shave too close the hair wont grow back straight, instead it will curl and grow under your skin creating those problems.
my friend: if you have a darker skin tone, a 5 O'clock shadow wont even show. avoid shaving against the grain and too close and you should be good to go!

I think doing some beard mapping will help you immensely. Run your fingers over every inch of your face and make note of how your hair grows in each spot. Then shave 'with the grain' for your first pass (or only pass).

I have to shave down towards my adam's apple right under my chin, towards my adams apple on the sides of my neck, and up from my chest below my adams apple. And on the stupid knob itself, I have to just deal with it, because it starts swirling and going all crazy. If I get ingrown hairs, that's where they'll be...

by the way, I forgot to mention. please do yourself a favour and pick up a DE razor instead of the electric shaver. I used to have a "high end" braun electric shaver when I was 14 and I am so glad I got rid of it.
Those devices do not allow you to shave with or against the grain, you have no control

"Negro?" I was taught that was a racially insensitive term. Isn't it preferable to say "African American," or "Black?" I am sorry to stray from the subject, but I don't want anyone to be offended.

hit me that way as well..really only see it used on ebay ..if you punch in " negro" all kinds of stuff comes up...and I grew up when "colored" was the polite term...if you are born in America, and your ancestors were African ,then African American or American African are equal in every respect to Italian American, etc. etc...my thoughts only, and I have no wish to steer anyone one way or the other..

Hell he can call himself whatever he likes, what is important is answering his shaving question

well I'm Latino and my dad gets razor bumps, and many of my uncles. He left the electric and used a Gillette mach 3 but now switched to a de- 5 days he tells me and enjoying it.
I switched to a de over a month ago and everyone at work says my face is smoother.
trust me, the benefits outweigh the simple learning curve. make the switch, learn about your face and hair growth, then see the results.
