What's new

Need help finding a new whisky. (scotch actually)

Hello gents.

First. I'm more a scotch guy than a bourbon guy. So to be more accurate, I'm looking for a new scotch.

What I really am looking for is something similar to the discontinued Glenmorangie Port Wood, that scotch was amazing.

If it can help, this is what I have access to. Scotch start bottom page 51.

Grab a bottle of Highland Park 12 yo. One of the best values in whisky IMHO and a fantastic drop.

Actually, if you can find the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, that is their modern replacement for the previous Port Wood finished bottlings. I think that's the closest equivalent.

I would also recommend a bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh for a Scotch with deep red fruit on the nose.

Scotch selection can be so personal, but out of those on your list, and based on what you had been drinking, you may want to try:

Highland Park
Talisker
Auchentoshan (esp. the triple wood)

If it can help, here are other whiskies I loved:

- Bushmills Black Bush and 10 YO (unfortunately, only the normal and BB are available here, and I feel like something new)
- Bruichladdich 12 YO, a little stronger, but good.
- Glenlivet 12 years. Good lower priced scotch (got it at the duty free)

I had the Glenfiddich 12 YO, not really a fan. My father had Ballantine and I'm not a fan of this one either.

Absolutely.

A great, complex, yet well-balanced Scotch for beginners AND seasoned drinkers.

This is also a great deal.

My favorite is Glenfiddich 18 or 21. I had a glass of 40 year old once, and it was SMOOOOOOTH, but no way would I pay what that costs for a bottle. At the time I think it was 2500$ a bottle, if you could find it. The 18 and 21 is pretty darn good IMO and much more reasonable.

agreed, the 21 is my favorite. I try and take a cruise every summer, and I bring back 2 or 3 bottles from the duty free every time.

A very hardy second recommendation. Outstanding!:thumbup:

Abso-frackin-lutely! :thumbup1:

There are Scotches. Then there's Aberlour a'bunadh. It's something . . . special. :w00t:

Since you like the Portwood finish, you might look at Balvenie's Portwood as well, although it's a bit pricey, being a 21 y.o. dram. Macallan's Cask Strength is a well-priced sherry monster you should also consider.

If looking for port barrel matured whiskey try like Glenmorangie, try Tyrconnell who have Port, Madeira or Sherry matured ranges that deliver far more in terms of enhanced flavor (nose) and especially in taste (mouth).

I find that the Glenmorangie Port, Sautern....matured whiskys adds very interesting flavor (nose) but little in terms of taste.

Tyrconnell 10 Yr Old Sherry Finish - “Rich and full in the big bodied mouth with well layered flavours where more citrus is apparent along with honey, vanilla and some tropical notes.” IWSC Judges.

Tyrconnell 10 Yr Old Madeira Finish - “This is one of the best Madeira finishes I have ever come across. The balance defies belief while the higher notes makes one purr. I am astonished.” Jim Murray 2008 Whiskey Bible - Rating 95/100 & Irish Whiskey of the Year

Tyrconnell 10 Yr Old Port Finish - “This is like a fruit and nuts chocolate bar – without the nuts. Wonderful” Jim Murray 2008 Whiskey Bible – Rating 93/100

I highly recommend purchasing the two gift sets 3 x 20 cl of the 6 Classic Malts as a means of honing in on the type of Soctch that you prefer.

Set 1
Lagavulin 16 ,Talisker 10, Cragganmore 12

Set 2
Dalwhinnie 15yo, Glenkinchie 12yo & Oban 14yo.

Well, if you can adapt you pallet to a drier taste, Glenmorangie sherry barrel, the Lasanta is a very nice whisky. I prefer it to port barrel, but I've always preferred my drinks dry.

I think the Lasanta is pure evil because it appeals to my love of a good malt with dry sherry. It's all I can do to resist it!

YMMV,
Ian

200$ is a little more than I want to pay at the moment :S (about 3x).

I think I might get a highland park for now, then the Aberlour a little later this summer.

I'm in New Brunswick Canada for the summer, and the beer is SO expensive, I guess I'll try a few different bottles.

Anyone tried the Bowmore Darkest?

When my Bushmills ends, I think I'll get some JW Black Label as my everyday whisky.

I finally got the Bowmore Darkest... WOW.

I paid like 65$ for the bottle, and back in Quebec that bottle costs about 100$. So I'll just drink this as my EDW and get another bottle before I get back home ;)
