Need advise on DE from frequent travelers

I've been wet shaving for a while but didn't discover this community till recently. I fly a lot for work so I pretty much live half my life on the road so I've adapted a bit with my DE shaving routine and have perfected it for the road. I take a lot of short flights in the US so I live off of cary on bags, I pretty much never check a bag in. As such, I always have to buy blades where ever I land since one day I could be in NYC and the next in the middle of Wyoming. Where am I able to consistently buy good cheap blades? For now I have been sticking to the generic Walgreens blades. They are cheap, I can find them in almost every city, they aren't in difficult to find places, they work pretty damn well for what they are, and I can pick them up at 2 am driving to the hotel from the airport. There is just two draw backs, first they are expensive for the quality razor blade they are and second I don't need 10 blades, at most 2-3. Any of you travelers have similar experiences? What blades have you found to be cheap, good and hopefully comes in a 5 pack? I know its silly but I always feel really guilty throwing away so many unused blades for no reason.

As for my set up, I use an Edwing Jagger DE89 because they are cheap and work awesome. I have had them confiscated, lost, forgotten, stolen you name it, its easy to replace and amazon ships it to where ever I will be next day for an extra 4 dollars. I use the CO bigalow travel size because its small and compact and 90% of the time I'm in close driving distance to a bath and bodyworks. I use a cheapo tweezerman brush for the same reason as the DE89 and a bed bath and beyond ramekin cause is $1.50 and I can find their stores in every city. Finally I use NIVEA aftershave cause its small, cheap, easy to find (the NIVEA is actually 3.3 oz not 3 but I've only had 1 TSA agent ***** me out and make me throw it away). Now the only part left to perfect is the razor.

BTW for all you non-travelers out there here is a great tip for going through security, have your DE in the same clear plastic bag as your liquids taken apart, it saves a huge hassle going through x-ray. I've only been stopped maybe 10 times (not much for the amount I travel) to check my DE and its so much easier when its already out of your bag and they can see it. Half the time they don't even bother having me take it out of the plastic bag. They'll give you a whole talk on how you should just use the bag for liquids and stuff but honestly none of the TSA guys really care.

I think you're doing the best you can in your situation. I traveled the same as you for about 4 years and was in a different city week to week and sometimes day to day. Unless you are going to move to checking your bag (a hassle with that much flight-time), buying blades where you land is probably the best you can do at this point.

I just started DE shaving over a month ago and have a business trip coming up to the Bay Area. Since its over a week in the same location I'm going to go ahead and check my bag and thus will bring my Astra SPs. Normally though I travel to Taos, NM via ABQ and on those trips I carry-on, thus I'll have do as you do and find a local source of blades.

I'm not going back to the Mach3 just for travel.

Sally's beauty is a chain that's in most cities - they carry Personna Lab Blues, 5 pack $1.79. Won't be open at 2 am, but might be a better first option for you. Safe travels!

**For what its worth, now that you've been DE shaving your technique is guaranteed to get better. I know mine has. Maybe you can try some of the cheaper disposables and just take what you need? Two weeks ago I had to use a hotel razor and it worked great with my Speick stick.

One other suggestion that may help in certain situations - bring a single edge razor as well as a double edge - sometimes in grocery stores I'll see a pack of Treet single edge blades where they don't stock DE blades of any kind at all. Just a thought.

I don't know if you have any lead time before your trips, but what about mailing a few blades to your hotel? Also, if you tend to stay at the same hotel every time you're in town, ask the manager to keep an envelope for you there. Even if you're only there every few months, you would be surprised how accommodating they will be. I used to stay everywhere from the Park Lane Hilton in London, to the Holiday Inn Express in Cape Town, to the Homewood Suites in Edmonton, and the service was comparable at all of them, when you ask for special favours. Sure, you don't get turn down and a chocolate on your pillow at the Holiday Inn, but I've never had them fail on a special request.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply guys. This forum is pretty awesome, def did not expect to hear back from so many people so quickly.

Thanks for the tip! I had no idea I could find them there. The walgreens ones are sometimes pretty expensive, sometimes it can be 6-7 dollars for a pack of 10. I will def start checking out how close the sally's stores are from my place.

Ya grocery stores are usually my fall back plan, but in a lot of the business areas I stay by sometimes the grocery store is actually surprisingly far away. Haven't tried a single edge razor yet.

Very true, I get some sweet perks since I pretty much live at the SPG chains. I know my company pays a lot for the rooms because most of the bookings are with only a week lead time. I've noticed a lot of people on this forum doing the mailing ahead thing. For me the mailing ahead thing is usually a bit of a hassle my schedule is a little too unpredictable which is why I have amazon prime, for the cheap next day shipping.

Ya, shaving is my one guilty pleasure I allow myself. With all the traveling I have my life down to bare essentials but the one thing I can't live without is my DE shaving. My co-works and I all have that 1 thing that takes up more room than it should in our carry-ons, I think traveling this much you need to allow yourself at least 1-2 luxuries or it can really wear you down.

Walmart carries Wilkies. 10 pack for $1.79. Doesn't address your concern about throwing unused blades away, but they're cheap enough. And Walmart is ubiquitous.

At the end of your stay, mail the unused blades home.
you can never have too much stock, you never know when the shavepocalypse will strike.

I'm glad I found this thread today. I was going to start a similar one. I just returned from an airline trip from Wyoming to Florida and back. I didn't plan ahead for my DE and resorted to a BIC diposable with an Omega turnback travel brush and shave stick. Great lather but had a week of bad to less than desirable shaves. I am spoiled on DE shaving. I wish I had followed the advice others on B&B have provided and mailed blades ahead. I don't care for Wal-Mart Wilks or some of the other locally available generics so I think mailing ahead is the way for me. Either that or find a better cartridge blade (I hate even saying that!) just for travel. Foe road travel I take my Tech broken down into a tall pill bottle with a couple Astra or Personna Blues.
