What's new

Need a new razor

I have had a Murker 34HD since 2010 and love it! But I feel like I am not getting consistent shaves. I have a very coarse beard and use hot water then lather up with olive oil as my preshave and use either a feather or wilkinson blade with either proraso red or Arko or DR Harris Arlington. Then re wet my face with both water and olive oil for my across the grain pass.

My question is, Is there a better razor I could use? What about an open comb razor? What is their purpose and function? Do they work with coarse beards? If not what does?

I would graciously appreciate any help or suggestions on a razor recommendation and creams , soaps etc.

Best,
Jerry

I have a Gillette Slim adjustable that I love. You can dial it up to be as smooth or aggressive as you want it to be.

I also have a '60's Gillette slim adjustable. It works great for all types of blades.

I started with a Merkur 33C Classic years back, but I gave it to my brother to get him into classic shaving. The Merkur gave me great shaves. Since it wasn't adjustable, it required more manual angle movement than the Gillette while shaving. Also, because it wasn't adjustable, I could only get great shaves on the Merkur with specific blades.

Feather blades have a big bite. Wilkinson blades do not stay sharp long. Have you tried other blades?

How are your shaves not consistent? Does it happen with a fresh blade? After a few shaves?

The creams you are using are good ones. I hope that your lather is good as well.

You mentioned that you shave across the grain on the 2nd shave pass. Check your hair growth pattern. Then try shaving with the grain on the 1st pass, against the grain on the 2nd pass, then across the grain on the 3rd pass.

Yes I have tried other blades from Gillette 7 o clock to feather. And I use a new blade each time I shave. I mostly use the wilkinson blades because the feathers are expensive.

I would love help with lather! I usually put the shave cream in a mug then add water as I go b

What is a futur? And where can I get one? Is it better then a Gillette 60 slim? Can you get a Gillette new?

If you love the 34C then try the slant bar (37C). The size and handle is exactly the same as the 34C. This razor will deal with a course beard without a problem. Use the same blades you have been using.
