Naniwa 10K or 12K

They would both be fine choices. I've got a 12k Naniwa SS and it does a very nice job of touching up.

that´s a very interesting question, that I had to ask recently, too.
I have a naniwa SS 10k and I was wondering if I should buy a 12k as well.
I did not

The 10k is very close to the 12k. Both seem to be very good.
I like to slurry up my SS10k wich makes it extremely fast
and polishing absolutely beautiful. You then want to dilute the slurry 1-2 times
during the touch up and finish on water only with a very light touch.
This should do the trick to bring back an edge to shave readyness.
You might want to add 10 strokes of diamond or chromiumoxide
to give that extra "hmmmmm-" smoothnes

This should work for the 12k as well. So, get whatever is cheaper to you
(here in germany you can get the 10k for 60€ and the 12k for 85€)

After how many shaves is the razor starting to pull? If it is after 6 to 10 and all you do between each shave is strop with leather, then maybe you really don't need to consider a finishing stone just yet.
When a razor begins to pull, it means to me that I need to do something other than just strop with my leather. I go directly to my hard pasted strop and give the razor 6 to 10 very light strokes. No more, since good crox is very agressive. Then I do 50 laps on the leather and I am good to go another 6 to 10 shaves again.
I keep this up for better than 3 months to maintain my edges. Then I consider a touchup on my finishing hone, but only after the crox stops working.
There is a consideable difference in the price between both, and the cheaper one works just fine for me.
Oh, and by the way, I do have the nani 12k and the Shapton 16k if I need them.

Enjoy!

There are a lot of cheaper options for touching up a razor. One is a strop with CrO pastes on it, this will do fine for a while until it ends up rounding the edge a bit, then you will need a hone.

A swaty baber's hone is what I use when I need to do a touch up before a shave. I Whiper lather up in my bowel, then I lather the swaty and do about 3-5 passes and then a stropping. That is all I need to bring a good edge back, the shaves are nice after this.

I own a Naniwa 12K Super stone and I love it, I haven't used it for touch ups though, I use it in my progression of regular honing as follows:

DMT-E 1200 Continuous for bevels
Norton 4k/8k for the sharpening and polishing
Then the Naniwa for a finish which usually only takes 5-10 passes with water. The edge ends up being so much nicer after the Naniwa from the 8K. I do shave off the 8K sometimes though and it works fine.

where you been hiding out at bud!

I too will go the the entire honing progression for a touch up. Sometimes I raise a slurry on my nakayama asagi kitta blend stone and dilute it as I go along. That works great but usually I just rehone it.

Many different opinions. Progressions, circles, pyramids, crox etc. A person whose opinion I respect suggested to me and I've found it to work when refreshing, is that if either refreshing or in a progression, when you 'think' your there, give 10 e/w edge trailing on your highest grit stone. It adds 'something', like all our idiosyncratic methods. Stick to the 'commonsense' rule. If it makes sense and gives you what you want, then generally it's the right way to go. I don't count strokes etc, just check with your thumb every so on, and when it's sweet, give 10 E/W leading, on the naniwa 10-12k. You don't need to stress over a stroke or two. If you have spent 3/4 of an hour and get DULL, walk away for a few hours. She'll be right. Dont chuck the razor in toilet, we've all been there. Just walk away. Cheers fellas

If memory serves, I've seen people complain that the SS 10k is quite a bit softer than the 12k, generally they found this softness to be problematic. I personally wasn't hugely fond of the 12k, but it sounds like the better choice of the two.

I'd recommend a sigma power 10k or 13k over either of them.

I read some where that a razor does,nt need any more than 10 k ?

My advice would be to get a 3 line swaty if you prefer the idea of a honer crox if you don't mind paste ... The traditional way would be a swaty and a strop... I have used naniwas 10 and 12 k and I acatuly prefer the edge of the swaty, it's very nice.

If you can find one that is.
It took me a while to score one at a decent price.
I agree they work fine as finishing stones but somehow it feels the blade could get sharper.
I have been using crOx until now but I just bought a shapton 16k hoping for a more refined edge.
It has not arrived yet though so I can not comment on how that is working out.

I'm no longer using Naniwa Super Stones, but between the 10K and the 12K I definitely prefer the 12K, either used alone or finished with CrOx powder on balsa.

I sold my SS12K. I could shave off it, but found myself going back to lapping film to get it keen to my liking. I went to Shapton pros up to 15K and a Suehiro 20K and couldn't be happier. I now have confidence that I can give any blade, that's not damaged, an excellent edge. If you don't want to spend a fortune on stones, lapping film will meet your needs. JMHO

Ive considered getting a vintage barbers hone like that. Just wasnt sure if it was worth it outside of for my collection. Might get one someday just for the cool factor. I love vintage stuff
