My home made paddle strop.....working progress!

hi Guys,

Well following on from making my hanging strop (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=150467) i thought I would have a bash at making a paddle strop.

Please bear with me as my carpentry skills are at a complete novice level, I'm a stonemason by trade so I'm used to bashing the bee-jesus outa stuff, and this wood does like to mark easily

So 2" width and just over a foot long (not including handle), made from pine and using pine dowels to hold the whole thing together!

I plan on coating one side in Dovo black and the other with CrOx.

Just need to oil her up then I've got the choice of which leather to dress her in, at the moment the Camel hide that I've got is winning, always wanted to try the stuff out for a strop! :w00t:

All comments welcome and appreciated

So on with the pics...........

If that's how your "beginner's" woodworking turns out I'd love to see your stonework! That's beautiful!

Thanks for the kind words!! I've just got to apply a few more coats of 'Liberon finishing oil' then I can get the leather stuck on.

Heres a quick couple of pics of a job I finished recently, replacement Capitol for the Central Bar at the end of the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, carved from a solid block of stone.

That's pretty sweet looking.

I think you underestimate your design skills. Remember, there are people in the world, for whom using a hammer without hurting themselves is a challenge.

I work in the computer field. I have met some young "computer geeks" who have honestly never used even a single tool their entire lives. That's horribly sad, and pretty messed up in my opinion.

That was my exact reaction and then I say your stone work and was even more blown away. Between these and the strop you made, you are truly a very talented man.

That's incredible work, both wood and stone. I'd "forgotten" things like that were still hand made. Wonderful stuff, thanks for sharing. :001_smile

Awesome work! Looks like these are the corner pieces for the front of the bar.

How on earth did you find this pic!!!!!!!!!!

Yes your exactly right, Thats the Central bar, some call it the 'Coffin' bar because of its unusual shape!! Theres not a 90 degree corner on the building so all of the replacement caps were funny angles, the picture from before was the only one from a solid block, I did another in two halfs, heres a pic roughly half way thro one half...

And finally complete...

After seeing your craving work, :w00t: your description of the bar led me to look further. The bar restoration as a whole looks very nice, as does the city. Wish I was there to pay a visit and help celebrate.

Inspired me to make my own. Hope you have no objection to me using your design.
