What's new

My Guess... 3017

I've been on the road since the 20th and I didn't want to risk breaking my old spice mug so I brought along a tin of mikes barbershop and MdC. I'll get back to the grind on Friday.

As an aside, I think Mikes is a way better soap than MdC. I have a feeling I'll be trading it for a new brush and/or other soaps.

Started the p160 on 10/10.

Yesterday was the last shave with P160. Lasted 67-68 shaves (apple notes deleted by accident). Would purchase again-very slick and moisturizing, and perfect for the winter.

next up: I am going to use la shaving soap samples of SM bay rum, and bespoke #1. Following that, a sample of T&H grafton. When those 3 are done, I will knock out the last 50 grams of xpec original.

10/10/13- 1/1/14 P160 (67 shaves)

I could probably knock out my collection in a year, if I didn't keep adding to it. So far I'm down to half of a Speick stick (another on the way with some Proraso Red), a puck of VDH Luxury that's only been used once, and a half-empty tube of Cremo. My Cirmes puck got banished to the shower, as I got tired of fighting with it to make a useable lather. Oh yeah, and there's a sampler of RazoRock ACBCA en route from a generous PIF (Thanks, Xillion!). Ok... maybe more than a year. I'll need more blades and aftershave before the month is up though!

Taking a short hiatus of EPL while I wait for a replacement bowl to arrive.

Speick is an incredible soap. I may go back to my weekly soap rotation. We shall see! Not sure if I have what it takes to finish something.

Anyone else experienced this with a product before?

Tiny hard bits of soap mixed in? I didn't mill it because it's a soft soap. Just came like that. It started feeling like an exfoliating face wash.

It's a shame because I was at least halfway through the 100g.

Just punched through the bottom of a puck of CADE. It's the first one I've finished with daily use, so I'm not sure how long I've got left with it. I'm sure I'll be on to the next one in two or three weeks.

9/16/13-9/23/13 Antica Barbiera Bitter Almond 1/2 oz Sample, 11 shaves; 8 face, 3 head, a day or two of Kyle's prep. Nothing special.

9/24/13-10/23/13: Mitchell's Wool Fat 1/2 oz sample: 35 shaves; 8 head, 27 face, 3 passes. I can't believe how long the sample lasted. Head and shoulders above all my other soaps so far. Will buy again.

10/24/13-10/27/13: did not shave

10/28/13-11/3/13: TOBS Sandlewood cream, 1/2 oz sample: 7 days, 7 shaves all face. Very nice scent, excellent cream but I'm not a cream guy. Might try the soap one day.

11/4/13-12/10/13: Cella 1/2 oz sample: 29 shaves. Very good, easy to lather, nice slickness and cushion Scent is just ok. Second to MWF

12/11/13-12/24/13: Mike's Lily of the Valley sample: 12 SHAVES. Doesn't last as long as MWF or Cella. Good, not great, I'd rank behind Cella.

12/25/13-12/31/13: Used a CF cream I got for xmas

1/1/14-???: Tabac 1/2oz. Sample

Well, on 12/24/13 I started working on a puck of Tabac as my first attempt at 3017. My first reaction is that after a couple of shaves to dial in the water/product combination, this soap produces as high a quality of lather that I have ever gotten from anything I have tried. Of course you all already know this.

I am not sure that I will be able to see this to completion, however. The scent doesn't give me that refreshed feeling after shaving that I love. The scent is also very strong, and I can even get a whiff of it hours later. I will try to finish out the month of January and see if my opinion changes.

Now half as wise
For me, the scent did decrease a little over time. Tabac is an ambitious undertaking for your first 3017 attempt, because it is larger than most other pucks, so lasts much longer.

This reminds me that I need to update my list!

Nice thread! I've always used products more or less this way so I'll join in. This past summer, I started on my first tub of Cella and liked it so much I used it every day until it was gone. Then I went with a tube of Proraso green that lasted me until just before Christmas. Now I'm on my first puck of Tabac.

I feel lucky in a way that I have hard water so I use more product than most people to get a good lather :)

IT'S OVER...

The journey that began on January 1, 2010 ended almost 4 years to the day. On December 31, 2013, the Penhaligon's English Fern gave up its last shave.

What began as preventative measure to curb the accumulation of soaps in my collection and to use product that was sitting in my shave den grew into something that took on a life of its own and from that the "3017" method was hatched.

Trust me when I tell you, it was totally unintentional. Heck, it wasn't even my idea. As more of us joined in it became apparent to many of us that perhaps we were doing ourselves a disservice by using soaps in such a large rotation that we really weren't getting the full effect of what a soap's true potential could be by using a puck on a daily basis and discovering each soap's particular nuances. From this, the 3017 method was born.

Originally, the thread was called "2017" not "3017". At the time this thread began, I thought it would take me until the year 2017 to finish the soaps pictured above (and a few not pictured). On a lark, one of the Mods changed the title to "3017" and it stuck.

During the course of this thread, many members have joined in. Some have stayed, some have gone and some poke their heads in occasionally. The thread has continued to flourish with the help of members like beginish, inspiringk, brucered, FL shaver, djh, Jim, brianw, insomniac, catherix, Sullybob, brothers, strop and breadstick (who could forget those lists)... just to name a few who so vigilantly carry the 3017 banner and adhere to its methodology. There are many more members who contribute regularly and with great enthusiasm and vitality.

The 3017'ers are an extraordinary group of individuals who have performed PIF's, laid down soap challenges, feed the need of list-makers (you know who you are ), charts and tables have been developed demonstrating which soaps are the most popular (DR Harris Arlington, thank you very much ) also showing a change over the years of which soaps have fallen in and out of favor as well as soaps that are no longer in existence. The 3017'ers have developed a resourceful reference tool for those seeking information on certain soaps.

All in all, the experience for me has been a positive one. A little self-discipline never hurt anyone and it sure beat the hell out of failing the Purchase Sabbaticals on an annual basis.

This is how it went....

They were donated to the 2nd Annual Sue Moore Auction fetching $165.00 from.. you guessed it, brianw. :thumbup1:

Where to from here?

Although the soaps pictured above were the original ones that I set out to finish, this is what remains in my collection and were obtained after the challenge had begun...

DR Harris Arlington
DR Harris Windsor
AoS Lavender
Martin de Candre (unscented)
Old Spice NOS
Crabtree & Evelyn Almond Oil NOS
Arko Shave stick

On January 2nd, I began the NOS Old Spice puck (still in its original cellophane wrapping). Honestly, I don't think I will ever go back to a full rotation of soaps. However, with the conclusion of this journey, I think I will use other soaps when the mood strikes me rather than the dogged determination to keep moving forward on any one particular soap.

From this thread, I take away the lessons learned. I have enjoyed it immensely.

For me, the journey is over.
