What's new

my first straight shave.

So I just had my first straight shave with my feather ss with the professional blade. I had a palmolive shave stick and a Wilkinson sword brush which was 4.50gbp and I thought it was garbage. However please bear in mind I have never used a brush in my life before. So I really wanted to use a bowl so I soaked the bowl and the brush in hot water then tried to rub the stick in the bowl and use the brush to make a lather. No joy so I rubbed the stick straight on my face and made what I thought was a pretty successful lather. Then the shave I have watched video after video on YouTube however watching and doing are two very different things! The shave was pretty successful two passes WTG. One slice just under my nose. That hurts but hasn't bled too much. However on the first pass it felt like it was pulling all the time not sure if angle was wrong or face prep. It was about a 4 day growth but not too heavy. Any comments greatly revived thanks

I also had my first SS style shave yesterday..seems like more lather n water is needed to be more slick compared to my real straight razors

Shaving 4 days growth is not ideal for someone new to straights, maybe try the 1st pass WTG with your regular razor. Keep at it it does get better as your tech improves.

Glad you made it through the first shave!

Most of the time angle of the blade and speed of the pass makes the most difference in perceived tugging. If you go too slow the sharp blade will catch on every whisker before decapitating it...so it feels like its pulling. If you speed up the pace it will slice rather than catch and you will have less pulling and tugging sensations.

Make sure your skin is nice and flat for each area you are trying to shave. It will probably tug more than it should the first couple of shaves as you get things like angle and skin tautness down. Shorter strokes may also help you maintain a better angle as you learn what one should feel like.

Good job on the first attempt! Now on to #2 :)
