What's new

My first badger brush, what a feeling!

I´ve been using DE razors for a couple of weeks now and so far I´ve used a very cheap brush which I bought in the local food store. I considered it a bit harsh but I didn´t know better about how a brush should feel like. After seeing videos and reading about face lathering I decided to give it a try... It hurt like hell and my cheeks were really burnt. It felt like steel wool. Since I´m on a budget I can´t afford a finer brush or a silvertip but today I found a no name pure badger with a stand for app. 28 USD. I bought the brush and when trying it for the first time I was a happy man. The difference was immense, I couldn´t believe it! So soft against my cheeks. Shaving today felt absolutely wonderful.

Congratulations Ken, glad to hear that you're enjoying your upgrade.

No matter how humble the brush if it builds a nice lather and doesn't give you brush burn (like your first brush), it's a good brush.

My first brush was a Tweezerman, a reliable clipped pure badger brush, that I paid $12 for. I used for almost a year and then upgraded to a Frank Shave silvertip, which is probably similar to your brush.

Be sure to rinse your new brush well each use and occasionally give it a good cleaning and it will take good care of your non-burned face for years to come.

Same here. Used a super cheap Omega for years then bought a finest of FS. I now own several Pure Simpsons and a new FS in finest. The difference is enough for me to have sold all but my original Omega boar.

I used a VDH boar and a couple Omega boars for the first 6 months then I purchased a Simpson Berkley from B/S/T and was hooked on badger ever since never have used another boar.

Good move! Welcome to Badger-dom! Your cheap boar probably isn't properly broken in yet. It will never hold soap and water like a badger, but it will get a little softer if you use it now and then.

A cheap boar should not turn you off from quality boars like those from Semogue and Omega. My first boar was a VDH and I abhorred it. I went the badger route and thought that badger was great and boar was horrible. After trying a Semogue boar though, now I know what a quality boar is and I actually like it better than most of my badgers. I enjoy both boar and badger, but you just need to have a quality brush to know what each is capable of.

Keep in mind that this is a subjective/YMMV matter. If you prefer a scrubby or scritchy brush then a brush should feel like that. If you prefer a softer brush then a brush should feel like that. That's why don't all use the exact same brush.

No matter what the topic one data point does not define a trend. A poor example of anything shouldn't turn you off the quality alternatives.

Thanks for all the input and advice.

I´m looking forward in trying and I will for certain try to find a good quality boar brush when I´m better off financially. Thanks for the tip.
