Mr. Scruffy Cleans Some Razors (Pic Heavy)

I decided to clean a few of my recent acquisitions before the Texans-Colts game today.

Here they are as found in the wild: 2 Aristocrats, 2 Blue Tips and 1 Red Tip

Step One:

Fill a 2-qt saucepan with water about 1.5" from the rim and bring to a boil.

Remove from heat and add 2-3 ounces of Dawn dish soap.

Open the doors on TTO razors and place in the pot. For 3-piece razors, disassemble and then place in water.

Let the razors soak until the water is cool enough to place your hand in (20-30 mins)

By this time most if not all of the heavy deposits of grime and old soap scum will have come off.

When cool, remove the razors from the water and gently scrub with a SOFT toothbrush to remove any residual gunk.

Here is what these looked like after the soak and toothbrush.

As you can see, the razors have cleaned up pretty well. The nickel plated Red and Blue Tips will require some MAAS and elbow grease. I'll post pictures of that process next week end.

Step Two:

In the meantime, the Aristocrats are headed to the ultrasonic cleaner. I find that the US will not clean up severely oxidized razors (nickel, chrome silver plating) as well as gold razors. Also, I don't recommend placing painted razors in an ultrasonic cleaner. The paint will be removed along with all the dirt and grime left on the razor.

Both Aristocrats went through four 8-minute cycles in my 35w cleaner. I used Hagerty's Sonic Cleaning Solution as directed.

They came out very shiney. Even the areas of plating loss on the knurled handles took on a shine!

These razors have not been polished. I highly recommend the use of an ultrasonic cleaner. It will make gold plated razors shine. It will do the same for nickel and silver plated razors that do not have heavy oxidation. Heavy oxidation will require elbow grase and polish.

Warning: Ultrasonic cleaners will take the paint from a razor. I have a couple of Slim that used to have black paint in the numbers on the adjuster knob. Not any more. They are very shiney, though.

Step Three:

Soak your razors in a Barbicide bath, rinse and towel dry.

Put your shades on and enjoy your clean and shiney razors! :001_cool:

Harry,

They look great. Since the Texans beat the Colts today, will you make old razor cleaning a pregame ritual? 1-0 with preclean !

Great thread Mr. Scruffy.
I have some razors coming in which have some serious damage on them and I will be referencing this thread throughout their cleaning.

What is the consensus on painted items and ultrasonic cleaning? I have heard people say not to put them in for long periods of time, but quick cycles won't harm the paint, unless you are using a solution for paint removal. I ask because I plan on getting one for my razors and for my Zippo lighters, and some have paint/enamel on them(the lighters). I think if jewelery with things like enamel on them like some class rings can be cleaned, why couldn't a razor? I'd like something that I can run with just plain water so I could clean the inserts without taking the wick/wadding out and just letting them air dry afterward, especially since they are just going on display.

I just might! :thumbup1:

What US do you have?

I have this model which I purchased from Amazon.

The paint came off my Slims after a single 3-minute cycle. I'm going to experiment with tape over painted areas on some other razors I have. Interestingly, the US doesn't seem to damage the plastic coating on black handled super speeds. I cleaned one using two 8-minute cycles. It came out clean and pretty with no apparent color loss.

Wow!!!.. I was a bit skeptical about the whole Ultrasonic cleaner idea until now!

Thanks for posting the info.

Harry, you just 100% sold me on an ultrasonic cleaner! Would you care to share your model number and how much you paid for it? I'd love a SAFE way to get my gold razors to take on more of a shine. I dare not touch them with any sort of polish.

Excellent thread, and top notch photos.

Check out post #9 in this thread. :001_smile

I ordered one last night.

What does an ultra sonic *do*? i.e. does it disinfect, sanitize, or just clean?

thanks.

Fabulous job Harry. I can't believe they look so good.

Rats, I broke the 11th commandant again. "Thy shall not covet thy neighbor's razor."
