Milling soap

I just got a puck of GMS soap from are good friend soapbox but want to mill down to fit it to a container however, having never performed said act how is it done especially the repacking part.

Here's a grate (pun intended) link: http://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=23892

I've used this method and it works quite nice. However, I've always done it in the summer when the soaps are soft and tend to begin melt and make a mess of the grater. If I miss again I will cut them into pieces and then put them in the refrigerator for some time before grating. Chopping into very small pieces works well instead of grating. I've done that, too.

Good luck and enjoy.

Basically grate it into your container and pat it down. There's some other tips in there that are helpful. One thing I did to pack it is use a similar container, place some wax paper over top, and press down. Someone in that thread had also mentioned that you really only need to mill it down small enough to fit into the container... that way you save a little bit of time.

Hey Travis -- when you get it done, please post a picture to show us the results!

GMS is a soft puck, so you should be able to smoosh it into your container of choice without a lot of effort, unless the size/shape of the dish is really different from the rough-cut round puck (production pucks will be nicer and smoother).

If you want to mill it, I echo the suggestion that you refrigerate the puck first, BUT note that when you take it out of the cold, moisture will condense on the puck and you might get a film of water on the puck -- and a sloppy mess on your mill. I've never tried it, but I promise to send you another puck if you irrevocably screw up the sample I gave you!
