Menthol in Pre Shave

I read that the Art of Shaving recommends not using pre-shaving products with menthol because it "clogs the pores" and "numbs the skin." But the Proraso Pre-Cream has menthol and so many of us swear by it?

Any thoughts on AOS' recommendation?

proraso pre (no longer post) says that it opens the skin's pores and softens the beard.

i have been using it as a prep for about a week, and it is great.

I can only speak from experience and I use it as a pre-shave every day. If I somehow forget to apply it I notice within the first glide or two of my razor that something's off and the shave never goes as well.
