Menthol Fav's

So everyone, I've been slightly disenchanted lately. My very first real shaving product ever was a tub of Omega soft soap that I snagged off Amazon for $10 or so. I loved the stuff ever so much at first and thought that I'd never part with it. I also purchased a tube of Bigelow from the local BBW so that I could have both a cream and soap of the same caliber.

After purchasing some other extremely fantastic products, however, I have decided that the Omega/Bigelow/Proraso/whatever was more than likely just one of those "first girlfriend" sort of flings where you thought she was really great only because of your lack of experience. Don't get me wrong, that particular line of goods isn't bad, I just don't feel like it's great anymore. Some of my new faves are things like the $5 wonder Godrej, MWF, Provence Sante Green Tea, and EJ Sea Buckthorn.

My issue now is that I feel I need to get back on the menthol wagon, but I'm at a loss for what I should try next. I've heard good things about Godrej Menthol Mist, but wonder if it'll have the same zing the Bigelow had. I've also read about the Musgo Real being a fan favorite. Mama Bear's too. Anything else? Anything from which I should stay away? Please help, because I want my menthol back.

Godrej Menthol Mist is fantastic - far more zing than the CO Bigelow, and the lanolin really makes things glide nicely. I'd also highly recommend the cream from Jean at My Time Bath and Body - get it 10/10 on the menthol and I guarantee you'll never feel your face again. For something a little less extreme but very enjoyable, Mama Bear's Awakenings soap has a great balance of menthol and peppermint for cooling, plus tea tree oil for a bracing, antiseptic scent. Finally, I've heard good things about Saint Charles Sue's Blue Line products, but have never used them so I can't make a recommendation either way.

I agree with mr economy about the menthol blast from Menthol Mist. You can feel it during your shave and it is much stronger than Proraso.

When I first started wetshavingI bought a tube of Proraso because it was cheap and good. It works fine, but I was unimpressed with the menthol effect that people talk about. I couldn't feel much during the shave and after the shave when I splashed water it was weak.

the menthol from the Omega tub is hard to beat.

of the same ilk would be Santa Maria Novella, similar scent and a hair better in performance.

Looks like menthol mist is going to be the way to go. If the Santa Maria Novella is only a hair better, then I don't think I'll go for it as I feel like the Bigelow/Omega lacks more than a hair. The SCS suggestion should be worth checking out, though, as I really like Sue and the gang (whoever else might run the place!)

You can buy 1% or 2% menthol gel jars at the $.99 stores and add some to ANY soap or cream. You'll get more more freezery goodness than any single menthol product I've tried (Proraso soap, cream, can, Ingram's, Noxema). And that's with the 1%. This is what you can expect with the 2% menthol.

The menthol demolishes the scent of the soap/cream you're using. May explain why Proraso, Ingram and Noxema all smell the same to me. They're not all equal as soaps, though. Proraso is by far the best.

Good luck,

Steve

that's about right steve...i ordered some menthol from mama bear and added some to my soap and WOW what a feeling :w00t:. although i believe i added too much, but i'll know better next time. i ordered some sub zero from the shave den and i like it pretty good, but it wasn't like what some people said, it didn't numb my face, but that stuff i whipped up did. it worried me at first cause i didn't know if adding TOO MUCH could harm my skin, but i survived.

Got the Godrej Menthol Mist in from shaveabuck the other day. Used it a couple times, and all I can say is...eh. Not as good as the regular Godrej in my opinion. I really liked the eucalyptus in the Proraso both for the feel and the scent. I might be more open to it once summer is back, though.
